The Seattle International Film Festival is almost here with 450 films from 92 countries screening in cinemas across the Emerald City. What’s in it for the comic book geek or sci-fi fan?
Veterans of X-Men films including both cinematic Magnetos are among the films screening this year.
Kevin Bacon will be in Seattle to accept the Career Achievement in Acting Award at An Evening With Kevin Bacon program. After the award ceremony fans will see Bacon’s new film Cop Car on May 27th at the newly restored Egyptian Theater. Fans will be able to see Bacon classics like Footloose and Diner but for comic book lovers we remember his portrayal of Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class.
Michael Fassbender played Magneto in X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past and upcoming Apocalypse. The star will be joined by Kodi Smit-McPhee (who will play young Nightcrawler in Apocalypse) in the Western adventure Slow West.
Ian McKellen (Magneto of the original X-trilogy and Days of Future Past) plays an elderly Sherlock Holmes in Mr. Holmes. McKellen re-teams with his Gods and Monsters director Bill Condon.
The SIFF/Agents of SHIELD connection continues with Cobie Smulders. The actress who plays Maria Hill in the Marvel movies and television series will star in Results (a romantic comedy about personal trainers) opposite Guy Pearce who played the villain of Iron Man III. You can also see Smulders in the drama Unexpected during the festival.
Chris Evans is dominating the world in Avengers: Age of Ultron but hopes to spread his creative wings with a new movie premiering in Seattle. Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) stars and make his directorial debut in Before We Go, a romantic comedy so-starring Alice Eve.
Spy, this year’s Opening Night Film stars Melissa McCarthy along with more comic book movie stars including Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class) and Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Serenity, Gotham, Deadpool). Director Paul Feig will be in Seattle for the big event.
Two years ago Joss Whedon, Clark Gregg, Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker and more Whedonverse favorites walked the red carpet when Much Ago About Nothing was the Opening Night Film. Gregg returned last year to screen a feature he directed. Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) walked the Opening Night Red Carpet last year. Kyle MacLachlan was honored for his career in acting two years ago prior to joining Agents of SHIELD.
