The final trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse from 20th Century Fox delivered huge showdowns, revelations and a surprise.
Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is an immortal mutant and one of the team’s greatest enemies from comics. En Sabah Nur (aka The First One) first appeared in ancient Egypt, raised by a tribe who fanatically believed only the strong survive. Four Horsemen follow the blue-skinned powerhouse and execute his ruthless agenda. Apocalypse awakens and recruits (Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Ben Hardy as Archangel, Alexandra Shipp as a younger Storm) to destroy the world and rebuild it.
The new film is set in the 1980’s and director Bryan Singer’s follow-up to Days of Future Past. with cast members from First Class.
Here are the biggest moments, questions and revelations:
Snikt!
Let’s get right to the biggest surprise! Wolverine is in the movie!? With soldiers on the ground, Cyclops tells Mystique, “we had a little help” then cuts to Logan’s unmistakable adamantium claws popped in the same bunker as the soldiers attacked.
In Days of Future Past, Mystique rescued Logan from the clutches a young William Stryker (the military scientist behind Logan’s Weapon X transformation) so what is Logan’s state of mind in this new reality? Will this be Logan’s first contact with the X-Men? How big will Logan’s role be in the film? In comics, Wolverine did serve as Apocalypse’s Horseman for a brief period. This sets up Logan meeting Scott and Jean years before he did in the first film and the comics…but then again, we do have a couple of of mutants who can wipe memories.
Will it be Hugh Jackman in the role or is the X-Men producing team setting the stage for a younger actor in the role? Jackman is reuniting with director James Mangold for a follow-up to The Wolverine. Could the claws belong to another member of Logan’s family like daughter X-23 or his son Daken?
Professor Xavier kidnapped!
We know Charles Xavier will lose his hair in this film as James McAvoy assumes the classic look of his comic book counterpart. How does it happen? Xavier appears to be overpowered while using Cerebro to detect Apocalypse. En Sabah Nur shapeshifts to a bigger size like this comic book version. Professor X is taken but what does Apocalypse want with him? In the comics, there was a long-running story called The Twelve, a gathering of omega level mutants who could defeat En Sabah Nur once they were all united. Professor X, Magneto, Storm, Cyclops, Havok and Jean are among those Twelve.
Professor Mystique!
Raven Darkholme (Jennifer Lawrence) comes home to the Xavier Mansion to train and lead the new students against the new threat.
Blue Too?
In the trailer Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) appears to recognize Mystique. Is Kurt just surprised to see another blue-skinned mutant or does he hold a memory of her from before? In the comics, Mystique is Kurt’s mother.
Speaking of blue, we actually see Oscar Isaac without blue makeup, which makes us question his possible connection to Raven and Kurt.
Is En Sabah Nur a normal looking human who transforms into a blue-skinned monster when he absorbs other mutant powers? An injection of Raven’s DNA transformed Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) into the blue furry Beast. Does the blue skin mean Raven and Kurt are descendants of Apocalypse?
Son of M!
Quicksilver (Evan Peters) is back after his scene stealing scenes in the last film. The speedster reveals he is Magneto’s son. In the comics, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are Magneto’s twin children raised in a mysterious orphanage in eastern Europe. The two join Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants but later join the Avengers. The comic book origin was changed. In the last film, Quicksilver was a small town kid always in trouble with the law. Logan knew of him and recruited the racer in their plot to bust Magneto out of the Pentagon. Will we learn more about Magneto and his relationship with Peter’s mother? Could she turn out to be a mutant we recognize and could this revelation set the stage to introduce Magneto’s other daughter: Lorna Dane aka Polaris, the green haired mistress of magnetism who fell in love with Havok?
Mutant vs Mutant Battles!
Angel and Nightcrawler are seen fighting it out in a cage in Berlin. In the comics there were underground fight clubs where mutants fought for the amusement for patrons who gambled on the winners. Raven rescues Kurt and recruits the teleporter for her cause. Angel will join En Sabah Nur but how will the high-flying mutant become the Horseman of Death? In the comics Warren/Angel’s feather wings were amputated after an injury and Apocalypse gave him poison metal wings and becoming Archangel.
Beast vs Psylocke! The resident genius unleashes his bestial rage but he’s going up against a formidable ninja with deadly martial skills and psychic abilities. How did Elizabeth fall under Apocalypse’s control and could this fight lead to her joining the X-Men?
Storm vs Cyclops – battle of the leaders! Ororo (without powers) and Scott once fought in a duel for leadership of the team…way back when there was just one X-book! This is not Goddess Storm but badass Mohawk Storm? How did the Windrider become a Horseman and will she switch sides as casualties of war build up in the battle?
