Filming is underway on X-Men: Apocalypse. Bryan Singer is revealing pre-production art and talking about how the sequel evolves the franchise.

The cast of First Class and Days of Future Past return to face the first mutant born in ancient Egypt. The new film is set in the 1980’s. The director revealed a nod to Star Wars in a scene outside a mall cinema showing Return of the Jedi.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult are joined by new actors playing younger versions of Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Storm, Angel and Nightcrawler.

Singer shares new designs including the X-Men’s famous Blackbird and talks about the scope of the sequel and power of the enemy played by Oscar Isaac.

“It’s a big monster of a movie,”
the director told Empire. “The stakes are so high and global and the villain
is so mythic. It’s definitely an X-Men movie, but it really feels different.”

The art shows an underground pyramid that could be Akkaba, mythical home of En Sabah Nur in Egypt. You may remember a pyramid being built as followers chanted “En Sabah Nur” to a blue-skinned mutant while his four horsemen watch for their master’s bidding in the post-credits of Days of Future Past.

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives May 2016.
