.

As thousands yelled, “EN SABAH NUR” while a pyramid was seemingly building itself…longtime fans felt a chill.

The camera revealed a grey-skinned mutant and in the horizon four men on horses in what appeared to be ancient Egypt.

En Sabah Nur is the first mutant who would became known as Apocalypse. With Apocalypse there are always Four Horsemen.

Yes, Producers are going back to the beginning with the first mutant who would one day conquer the world.

In ancient Egypt ruled by Rama Tut, a group of desert warriors found a grey-skinned orphan in the ruins of Akkaba. En Sabah Nur (the First One) was raised that “only the strong survive” and he would pit mutant against mutant to create his super race. Apocalypse would go into periods of deep sleep, regenerate and awake more powerful than ever each time.

We can only speculate how the classic villain will be used in the upcoming sequel. Apocalypse is a master manipulator and he could be a behind the scenes villain while his ruthless enforcers (Four Horsemen, Dark Riders.)

With Apocalypse could come Mister Sinister (Nathaniel Essex) and a significant role for Cyclops and Jean Grey. Essex was a geneticist transformed by En Sabah Nur in the time of Charles Dawrin. Essex knew the genetic code of Scott Summers and Jean Grey could a produce a mutant powerful enough to defeat Apocalypse. That could lead to the introduction of Cable (the son of Scott from the future- it’s very, very complicated!) Cable is the mutant who founded X-Force, rumored to be a possible spinoff.

The film could take inspiration from Age of Apocalypse – the epic storyline in which reality was completely changed by the death of Professor X. In this alternative timeline Magneto formed the X-Men in honor of his friend to stand against Apocalypse. Storm, Quicksilver, Sabretooth, Blink were among his X-Men. Cyclops, Havok and Beast were evil since they were never found by Professor X. Wolverine and Jean Grey were rebel agents and lovers.

A long running storyline was “The Twelve” in which Apocalypse was searching for 12 omega level mutants who would unite to lead mutants an all-out war on humanity in the twilight of the planet. Several members of the X-Men are among The Twelve so this could be the basis of a future sequel.

We’ll have to wait and see but producers chose a powerhouse villain that could take the franchise into exciting new directions and possible spinoffs.
