X-Men: Apocalypse packed a ton of comic book history in the super-powered follow-up to First Class and Days of Future Past.
The sequel reunited Professor X, Mystique, Magneto, Beast and scene-stealing Quicksilver; introduced young Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler, Angel joined the cast plus Psylocke and a few surprises.
Logan popped his claws for an extended cameo. That sequence ignited big story potential for the next Wolverine or future X-Men sequel.
After the credits there a big name drop hinting of the next super villain who will torment the Children of the Atom.
Before we break down what that post-credits scene reveal could mean here’s a SPOILER ALERT!
If you have not seen X-Men: Apocalypse yet stop reading now.
Seriously.
OK.
Here it comes.
When the Xavier school is destroyed, Colonel William Stryer abducts Mystique, Quicksilver, Beast and Moira MacTaggert and takes them to the Weapon X Facility (the covert military labs in a dam as seen in X2) but Jean, Scott and Nightcrawler stow away to rescue their friends.
In a lab the trio suspect an animal is locked in one of the lab’s cages but Jean senses it is a mutant. She lets the Wolverine loose. (In Days of Future Past, Mystique prevented Stryker from abducting Logan but somehow he was captured and underwent the procedure giving him the metal claws and skeleton.) Hugh Jackman is wearing the iconic headgear and restraints as seen in Barry Windsor Smith’s famous Weapon X story. Jean frees Logan of the restraints and gives him a memory back and he takes off into the wild.
The post-credits scene takes us back to Weapon X as a clean up crew is mopping up the dead bodies and blood. Men in black take a vial of Logan’s blood and puts it in a metal briefcase with other vials. The case closes revealing Essex Corporation on it.
Something Sinister this ways comes!
Nathaniel Essex is one of the X-Men’s greatest enemies but comics fans him by another name: Mister Sinister.
In the comics Essex was a radical scientist in the Victorian age who committed atrocities in his experiments to test Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution and mutations. Essex discovered Apocalypse in a tomb as the immortal mutant was just coming out of his slumber. En Sabah Nur gave Essex powers and over the years the scientist gave himself more abilities stolen from mutants.
Mister Sinister is behind most horrific events in X-Men history including the Mutant Massacre. Sinister unleashed the Marauders (led by Sabretooth) to wipe out the Morlocks, a tribe of peaceful mutants living under Manhattan. It was during this battle, Angel’s wings were injured and had to be amputated.
X-Men with a bitter history with Sinister:
Gambit (Remy LeBeau) was a thief hired by Sinister to recruit the Marauders. When the attack happened, Remy tried to stop them but never shared his past after becoming an X-Man.
Cyclops was a little boy in an orphanage secretly owned by Essex. Xavier rescued him. After Jean’s death, Scott met, married and had a child with a woman named Madelyne Pryor who reminded Scott of Jean. Madelyne was Jean’s clone. Essex is obsessed with the DNA of the Summers and Grey families and believed their child could be an ultimate mutant. Nathan (Scott and Madelyne’s child) was infected with a virus and taken into the future where he was cured and raised to be ultimate soldier leading the war against Apocalypse in a future where En Sabah Nur has conquered the world. Nathan code-name Cable came back in time to lead the New Mutants and formed X-Force. Wade Wilson hinted that Cable could might be in the Deadpool sequel. Deadpool first appeared as a villain in X-Force before later teaming up with Cable and the X-Men.
Wolverine
A decade after Logan escaped the Weapon X Project and living in the wold, he became a victim of Essex’s horrific experiments. Mister Sinister actually became Miss Sinister for a time (Essex predicted his own death and found a powerful mutant to host him) and fought Logan and X-23 (the clone daughter of Wolverine.)
With his ties to multiple mutants, Mister Sinister could be the villain behind in the next Wolverine movie or X-Men movie. Could that vial stolen by the Essex Corporation be used to create Laura Kinney, X-23, the clone daughter of Wolverine?
