An X-Man unleashes new powers but will it be enough to stop an horrific enemy with the power of a X-icon?
Uncanny Avengers could be Avenging X-Men and their Amazing Friends. Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz have pitted the Avengers Unity Squad against the Red Skull. The Captain America villain still possesses the stolen brain and telepathic powers of Professor Charles Xavier. I still recall unleashing the loudest curse word shocking the entire comic book shop when I witnesses the unholy act way back in the first issue of the first volume.
The nightmare continues literally but in this week it was a case of mind over mutant.
Before we continue breaking down what happened and what it could mean for the mutants this year here’s a SPOILER ALERT!
If you have not read Uncanny Avengers #19 stop reading now.
Seriously.
OK.
Here it comes:
Rogue and most of the team are captives of the Red Skull in the former Avengers Mansion. Deadpool is on the lam with a Red Skull controlled Quicksilver on his trail.
The villain psychically breaks down each member of the team. They all fall until Cable.
This issue is a reminder of Cable’s mental abilities. The son of Cyclops is an expert strategist and fighter but it’s easy to forget this man of action has one of the most formidable mutant minds on Earth. He’s mind is usually preoccupied. Cable must focus his psi powers on keeping the techno-organic virus in his body in check.
In this week’s psi showdown it’s mutant brain vs. mutant brain. Cable is mentally taking on the mental abilties of the late great Professor X. Cable counterattacks with stab in the head. The Red Skull amps up the power with his next strike. Cable then initiates “Lifeboat Protocol” and wipes out his own mind?
Nathan appears to have wiped his mind clean before falling under the Red Skull’s control.
Is this the end of Cable?
I’ve always wondered if Nathan Summers is an Omega level mutant. Is Cable’s DNA different even among other mutants? Nathan’s father was Scott Summers/Cyclops but his mother was a clone of Jean Grey, a creation of Mister Sinister. Who knows what Essex did the Madelyn Pryor which resulted in Cable.
Cable gets a new ongoing series by James Robinson and Carlos Pachecho in April so Nathan will make a comeback. Is this protocol part of a new beginning and expanded powers for the freedom fighter from the future.
Before Cable can join the X-Men ResurrXion, he and his current team face an onslaught of terrors in the next chapter.
“The team has a mission for which they feel willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. They’re willing to die to win this fight, and take back Xavier from Red Skull. The fear that they probably share in common is having the Red Skull subvert them in this way.” Duggan told Marvel.com.
The Red Skull makes each member face their greatest fears next issue.
Uncanny Avengers #20 arrives February 8.
