Wonder Woman joins the pantheon of LGBTQ comic book heroes after 75 years in print.
The Amazon Princess is known for romantically being involved with Steve Trevor and fell in love with Superman in The New 52 era.
Acclaimed writer Greg Rucka is back on the Wonder Woman title and says it’s “logical” that Diana is “queer.”
As part of DC Comics Rebirth, Rucka returned to write Diana with two stories and two artists.
Rucka and Nicola Scott are crafting a Year One story showing Diana’s origin with her journey from the mythical island of Themyscira to the modern world.
Rucka and Liam Sharp are telling a story called The Lies, as Diana teams up with archenemy Cheetah to save Steve Trevor and find her way home.
As the iconic hero celebrates her 75th year, Rucka is confirming that Diana is a queer character in a new interview with Comicosity. As the writer explains, Diana’s identity is tied to the concept of her island home.
“It’s supposed to be a paradise. You’re supposed to be able to live happily. You’re supposed to be able – in a context where one can live happily, and part of what an individual needs for that happiness is to have to have a partner – to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship. And the only options are women.
But an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, “You’re gay.” They don’t. The concept doesn’t exist.
Now are we saying Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women? As Nicola and I approach it, the answer is obviously yes.
And it needs to be yes for a number of reasons. But perhaps foremost among them is, if no, then she leaves paradise only because of a potential romantic relationship with Steve. And diminishes her character. It would hurt the character and take away her heroism.
When we talk about agency of characters in 2016, Diana deciding to leave her home forever – which is what she believes she’s doing – if she does that because she’s fallen for a guy, I believe that dimishes her heroism.
She doesn’t leave because of Steve. She leaves because she wants to see the world and somebody must go and do this thing. And she has resolved it must be her to make this sacrifice.”

Will the Year One arc reveal a past same-sex love interest for Diana? Stay tuned.
Wonder Woman #7 is out this week.
Gal Gadot will reprise her Batman v Superman role as Diana in a Wonder Woman solo film coming in 2017 directed by Patty Jenkins. Chris Pine will play Steve Trevor.
75 and the iconic hero still evolves, resonates and inspires.
