Where did summer go?
May kicked off with the end of the Marvel Universe and the start of the epic Secret Wars.
After a two month Convergence (end of the DC Multiverse) DC Comics relaunched with 24 new number one issues.
Comics were a perfect vacation from reality during peak vacation season. Instead of the Boys of Summer here’s a salute to Women of Summer…in comics.
These are the characters, teams and creators who are the M-V-P’s:
DC Bombshells blasted across comic book shops, mobiles, tablets and more. Marguerite Bennett took retro inspired takes on DC Comics classic heroines into a digital first adventure that inspired some variants that put the fun back in comics this summer.
Scarlett Couture is a fashionista/super spy on a mission to find kidnapped supermodels and the conspiracy behind it all. The stylish summer series by Des Taylor from Titan Comics is a most welcome import and pure pop detour into fun and intrigue.
Batgirl after Convergence came out firing on all cylinders including a showdown with the all-new Batman, new threats and villains plus a star-packed annual including a heart pounding near reunion with Dick Grayson. Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr keep Burnside’s hero cool, relevant and a joy to follow. There’s even a new term “Batgirling” other comics but when they’re this fun let Barbara Gordon keep inspiring fans and creators.
Starfire set a new course in a new ongoing by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti with artist Emanuela Lupacchino. The Harley Quinn writing team sent Kori to the Florida Keys in a different direction for the alien princess with a new supporting cast. Gorgeous art, a mix of drama and humor make Kori’s more grounded new adventures soar.
A-Force is the all-female Avengers of Arcadia, of the the realms of Battleworld by G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett. She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, Nico and mysterious new Singularity. Not only is this a showcase for a variety of Marvel’s strongest women but the writers really show a confident commanding She-Hulk Jen fans will love. Marvel has already said A-Force will restart with a new number one this Fall as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now.
Harley Quinn & Power Girl are summer’s funnest power couple in an adventure by Conner & Palmiotti with Justin Gray and Stephane Roux. The unlikely duo were in a cosmic love clash with the warlord Vartox.
Black Canary is on a rock and roll, Kung Fu road trip in a brand new book by Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu. This is one of the most fun new titles from the DC relaunch with a crazy new mission and supporting cast for Dinah as a rock and on the run star.
The Creators:
Alex de Campi is the new reining Queen of Horror with Archie Meets Predator , and the Riverdale Gang is hunted by the infamous alien hunter and Betty and Veronica put aside their rivalry to kick some extraterrestrial butt and in the horror survival story No Mercy with Carla Speed McNeil, and Jenn Manley Lee from Image Comics.
Marguerite Bennett is one thanks to the previously mentioned DC Bombshells, plus Secret Wars hits A-Force and Years of Future Past, the Secret Wars tie-in reimagined a heroic older Kate Pryde and her children waging the resistance against the Sentinels plus 1602: Witch Hunter.
