All hope is lost.

Rick Grimes and his band of survivors were hungry, thirsty and emotionally beaten after the deaths of two characters.

There were moments that were Biblical: drought, dead frogs, deadly storms.

But something happened on last night’s episode that changes everything and could change the direction of the series.

Before we continue here’s a…

SPOILER ALERT!

If you did not watch last night’s episode or have not read the comic book series stop reading now.

Seriously.

Here it comes.

The survivors found bottled water in road with a letter saying the much needed gift was from “a friend” but Rick and the group didn’t trust it.

After the refused to drink the water a rainstorm started pouring down, followed by a tornado that wiped out the undead trying to storm the group’s barn refuge.

Hope returned to the group especially Maggie and Sasha who were approached by a clean, groomed man named Aaron who claimed to be “a friend.”

Who is this mystery man?

On Talking Dead creator Robert Kirkman said a gay character would be joining th e series.

In the comic book series Aaron first appeared in issue 67 as member of the Alexandria Safe-Zone community. Aaron and Eric (his partner) recruited survivors to join their community. Aaron and Eric worked for Douglas, leader of the Zone.

Aaron and Eric would  track groups of survivors and offer them a test. If they welcomed Aaron – they passed and would be taken to Douglas to join the community. If the group failed and Aaron was in danger, Eric was waiting and watching with a rifle.

While the television series continues to prove it does not follow the comics, this could be a sign of where the show is going.

Will they pass “the test?” Is Eric watching? Is Aaron really with the Alexandria Safe-Zone and are the survivors heading to Washington, D.C.

With the move to D.C. the group could soon encounter Negan. The leader of the Saviors who rivals The Governor as the comic book’s top villain.

Find out next week on The Walking Dead.
