The Doctor is in….Captain America: Civil War.

Marvel announced Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit) has joined the cast of the super sequel but who will he portray?

In the comics, the government passes the Superhero Registration Act forcing all costumed heroes to give up their secret identities and work under strict regulations for the government. Steve Rogers and Tony Stark are on opposite sides leading to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Stark hunting down Cap and any hero who refuses to register.

Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man, Black Panther and Spider-Man will appear. Daniel Bruhl will play Baron Zemo.

Could the man who plays Dr. Watson play an infamous Marvel doctor or another classic villain?

Let’s the speculation begin.

Here are the unusual suspects Freeman might play:

Doctor Faustus – Johann Fennhoff is a psychiatrist, criminal mastermind and expert in psychological warfare. Fennhoff appeared on Agent Carter but was not referred to as Faustus. The “master of men’s minds” plays a critical role in the climax of Civil War in the comics.

Baron Heinrich Zemo was an elite Nazi scientist with incredible power and slowed aging. The elder Zemo founded the first Masters of Evil, a collection of super villains to take on the Avengers. His son continued his legacy of hate but at one point led the Thunderbolts, villains pretending to be heroes. The T-bolts were recruited to hunt down anti-registration heroes during Civil War.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Director – Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce was a brilliant twist in The Winter Soldier. Could Freeman be playing a politician who leads the government into passing the Act or the government liaison who works with Tony Stark, who becomes S.H.I.E.L.D. director and The Initiative, the program to register, train and pay for teams in all fifty states.

Hero, villain, supporting character – who do you want to see Freeman portray?
