Death, Resurrection, Speculation and Teasers – it comes with being a comic book reader!
In just days Marvel announced a death then teased a possible resurrection. Before we dive into who or what may be Dead No More let’s look at who could be the victim of the first big event of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now.
Marvel revealed a major character will die kicking off Civil War II. Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso and writer Brian Michael Bendis gave the synopsis of the story and how it evolved during a Marvel editorial summit in a New York Daily News exclusive.
The preview revealed this time Tony Stark is fighting a different Captain in the conflict and that could be a clue to who gets killed.
As revealed in the first issue cover by Marvel, Iron Man and Captain Marvel will lead the opposing sides when a new character with the power to predict the future emerges. Should heroes use this to stop crimes before they happen? Should someone be punished for a crime before they commit it?
In the new cover art – Iron Man is joined by Captain America (Sam Wilson) and Star-Lord while Captain Marvel has She-Hulk and Spider-Man on her side.
Two names came up in the NYDN story and they creators say no it’s not Peter Parker or Johnny Storm.
But who will Marvel kill off to incite Civil War II?
Here are our prime candidates:
Steve Rogers continues to play a huge role despite not having powers and showing senior citizens can be heroes. You might expect Rogers to return to the role of Captain America in the character’s 75th anniversary but what if he’s killed in action? In the upcoming Civil War, Tony is taking the side I believe Steve would. Steve “died” before so it’s unlikely but the death of this longtime living symbol of liberty and freedom in a conflict like this would make a major impact on the universe.
She-Hulk is a beloved hero, an Avenger and a celebrated attorney. Jen’s powers as a super hero and super lawyer could put her on the front lines in the courts and on the battlefield over this questionable method of crime prevention. With personal ties to the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Defenders and all the heroes she’s helped as an attorney, Jen’s death would be an emotional shocker for fans and characters.
James Rhodes. Rhodey is back in Invincible Iron Man #6 by Bendis. War Machines is the next arc which includes “the first big clues” to Civil War II. Tony’s best friend also dated Carol so both leaders of the new conflict have emotional ties to this fan-favorite hero. Could Rhodey’s War Machine drones be the “police” hunting down potential criminals exposed by the seer? Since Bendis is the architect of Iron Man’s two books and the big event is he bringing Rhodey back to breaks our hearts and set up an emotional powerhouse between longtime Avengers?
Watch for more clues in Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill will brings Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson together but they’ll need the Avengers once they discover the threat at the mysterious pleasant hill.
Civil War II begins in June.
