The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t exactly following comic book continuity but you never know what parts of a character’s origins might make it to the big screen.
Hank Pym was a founding Avenger and inventor of Ultron but he won’t be featured in Joss Whedon’s sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Now we know Oscar winner Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym and Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man which hits cinemas right after Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Here’s what you might want know about the first two men (there’s a third guy, too) to wear the Ant-Man helmet:
Henry “Hank” Pym – genius inventor of the artificial intelligence who became Ultron, Pym particles that allowed him to shrink to microscopic size and a helmet that allowed him to communicate with…you guessed it, ants.
Hank would later use the Pym particles to grow to huge size as Giant-Man and Goliath. Pym’s dark side took over when he become known as Yellowjacket. Hank’s on-again, off-again, turbulent marriage to Janet Van Dyne is a rocky romance that’s part of Avengers relationship history. Jan used the Pym particles to become known as Wasp and at one time was team leader. It may be too close to home but Catherine Zeta-Jones would make an awesome Wasp.
Scott Lang’s background is less than heroic. He was burglar and electronics expert who went to prison but got early on good behavior. Under a Stark Industries program, the ex-con studied electronics under Tony stark and even helped developed a security for Avengers mansion. When Scott’s daughter, Cassie, became ill he turned back to a life of crime as a final resort. Breaking into Pym’s home, Lang stole canisters of Pym particles and the suit but more importantly found a scientist to could help save his daughter. Lang went on to fight with the Avengers, work for Tony Stark and the Fantastic Four’s Future Foundation.
While most die-hard Avengers fans would love to see a young Hank and Jan – you have to admit this introduction of the Ant-Man mythos to the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be a cool way to go.
With Edgar Wright’s direction and the incredible actors with their dramatic and comedic chops could make Ant-Man the next Iron Man as a flawed genius and a flawed smartass crook clash, connect while taking Marvel’s smallest hero to the big time.
