What if Robert Downey Jr. joins Captain America 3 and Marvel launches Civil War on the big screen?
The 2006 story pit Tony Stark against Steve Rogers over the Superhero Registration Act. When rookie heroes took on the powerhouse Nitro, innocent bystanders including children are killed in the battle. The Stamford Incident leads to the act which forces all super powered beings to surrender their secret identities, register and become official law enforcers for the government.
Tony Stark sides with the U.S. government. Steve Rogers believes the act violates civil liberties and leads the resistance.
If Civil War follows Age of Ultron here are the most exciting elements that could jump from comics to cinema:
Maria Hill the Enforcer! Hill assumes command of S.H.I.E.L.D. and must enforce the act and hunt Captain America with special units called Cape Killers.
Thunderbolts. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn wants to make a Thunderbolts movie. The team started out as villains masquerading as heroes but during Civil War – the squad of “reformed” villains were hired to hunt the rebel heroes. This could be a great way to introduce some of Marvel’s most infamous rogues.
Luke Cage. The Hero for Hire will star in his own Netflix series along with Daredevil and Iron Fist but Cage became Steve’s second in command on the run with the outlaw heroes.
Doctor Strange. The sorcerer sides with Steve and offers the resistance forces a secret headquarters at his mansion. With a Strange solo movie in the works – it could lead to him joining Earth’s Mightiest Outlaws.
Ragnarok. With no official word on Thor 3 – could we see Ragnarok strike like thunder? The clone of Thor was a pro-registration powerhouse weapon until he loses control. This could give Chris Hemsworth a chance to play unworthy and evil.
Punisher. Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D. keep captures outlaw heroes in a special prison called Project 42. Frank Castle is recruited by Cap to steal the prison plans to free his friends. After three different films with three different actors in the role – the infamous vigilante could be rebooted with a crucial role and fourth shot at a solo movie.
The aftermath of Civil War leads to Tony Stark running S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain Marvel leading the Mighty Avengers and of course the death and rebirth of Captain America.
Stay tuned.
