Just in time for Independence Day Marvel unveiled: U.S. AVENGERS from writer Al Ewing and artist Paco Medina. This is one of the new books in the upcoming Marvel NOW! initiative.

The lineup will include: Cannonball, Squirrel Girl, Red Hulk, a new Iron Patriot and Captain America (a grown up Danielle Cage from the future) and Roberto Da Costa, the former New Mutant who bought A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) and formed his own New Avengers team. This new book is the next evolution of the young billionaire’s vision.

The Avengers Idea Mechanics will become the American Intelligence Mechanics, be endorsed by the government and aim to replace S.H.I.E.L.D. in the aftermath of Civil War II.

“It will have passed quite narrowly in the House and Senate, mostly off the public feeling following Standoff and Civil War II.” Ewing told Marvel.com.

“This team is going to be much more heavily scrutinized than previous Avengers teams, and it may be on a shorter leash than Roberto’s used to. Essentially, it’s there to be a less murky, less unaccountable, one-country version of S.H.I.E.L.D., working with S.H.I.E.L.D. but not part of it. Opinion’s going to be very sharply divided around the world—there will be those with an instinctive distrust of anything so tied to one country and one flag, and on the other side of the political spectrum, there are going to be those wondering why such an ostentatiously American [super team] is run by someone who moved to the country from Brazil.”

The first big villain is the Golden Skull.

“[He’s]an arch-capitalist-verging-on-kleptocrat from Cage’s future,” revealed Ewing. “He’s taking advantage of a historical event that hasn’t happened to take over the United States and run it to his liking. And the U.S.Avengers won’t stand for that!”

Watch for U.S. Avengers by Al Ewing and Paco Medina this Fall.
