At Rose City Comic Con I said to Sam Humphries he’s made Uncanny X-Force the naughty, twisted X-Men book of the extended mutant family. To which he grinned and said “yeah!”

Psylocke has had a fling with Fantomex and his female twin – at the same time. Storm is sporting her badass Mohawk – with the attitude to match. Spiral started out as the enemy but you’ll want to cheer for the six armed twisted sister now. Mojo’s former enforcer has entangled the team in the fight over a mutant mystery child, a bizarre cult and demonic animal spirits. Plus, this crazy book has Bishop and Puck from Alpha Flight.

Story threads from issue one are coming to an explosive head in The Revenant War. I wanted to share part of this interview because Spiral is taking the spotlight in Uncanny X-Force #12 as she prepares for battle against a cult.

“Spiral has been trying to solve the mystery of a missing person: Ginny, the new mutant we first saw in issue #1. But as many mysteries go, it turns out Spiral is in deeper than she thought. The trail of Ginny brings her head-on with the Revenant cult spreading through Los Angeles,” Humphries tells Marvel.com.

“It’s a mystery story, it’s a horror story, but it’s Spiral, so it’s also a ninja story, with tons of blood and sharp steel. Adrian Alphona is drawing that issue and it is gorgeous.”

In the tradition of X-villains turned heroes – could Spiral be the next Rogue? Elizabeth and Spiral have a bitter history. Spiral worked for Mojo and Mystique in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Freedom Force. Humphries explained why he chose to focus on Spiral.

“Spiral is a great character—a cosmic ninja. We’ve seen her be the stoic killer, the cackling assassin. I wanted to get into her head a little more. Betsy has been through a lot, and we feel for her. But everything Betsy has endured, Spiral has survived tenfold. I wanted to see if we could have sympathy for her as well and still retain everything that makes her a cool character.”

The cult devoted to the Revenants grows in Los Angeles. Humphries promised this for devoted fans of the series. The Revenant Queen will be revealed in The Revenant War which kicks off in Uncanny X-Force #14 and “is someone you’ve seen before.”

Uncanny X-Force #12 arrives October 8.

The stunt woman known as Ricochet Rita was transformed into Spiral. For the backstory of Spiral – check out the Longshot limited series by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams.
