Did you feel the thunder in Thor: The Dark World?
I was somewhere in the middle on the scale of love and loathe with periodic jumps up the love tower during the latest Marvel movie.
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are charismatic and carry the story of revenge, redemption and brotherhood. Thor was almost too melancholy with his pining for Jane and sadness for his mother’s fate. I’m hoping in the third adventure Hemsworth gets to play the bold, brash Viking super-warrior again.
More Sif. Less Darcy. I know Jane, Darcy, Erik and Ian the intern help ground the mythos and give a human connection to the Asgardian legends but there was too much comedy. For every “Ahhhhh” moment there was an “Ugh” inspired by lines from Darcy and Erik.
Malekith – with all of Thor’s charismatic foes I’m not sure why producers chose the King of the Dark Elves. I love Christopher Eccleston but he didn’t get to really do enough. Malekith came across as a charmless villain who wanted to destroy the universe, but why? Unlike Loki there was no “love to hate” or “hate to love”energy for this bad guy.
The film did have some incredible action sequences and showdowns: I loved the prison break, Asgard invasion, Thor’s escape sequence and brutal battle with Kurse.
The plot was a little too loose as Aether for me. The need for Thor to release an imprisoned Loki worked for me but there was some story threads that just didn’t crackle with thunder. The final moment makes you scratch your head as far as plot goes but Hiddleston’s wicked charm makes you forget the leap in logic.
Five Hammers for Hemworth and Hiddleston!
Three Hammers out of five overall for Thor: The Dark World.
Here’s what I’m hoping for in Thor 3.
Amora the Enchantress – the icy blonde who went psycho love for Thor. Amora was a student of Karnilla, Queen of the Norns but was banished and learned her own brand of renegade sorcery. Think Helen Mirren’s Morgan Le Fay in Excalibur. Amora’s first mission was actually for Odin who sent her to Earth to eliminate Jane Foster. Amora and Loki have schemed, seduced and betrayed each other countless times over the years. The manipulative mistress of dark magic could escalate the sibling rivalry between the Sons of Odin and be the mastermind of these heavy hitting enforcers below:
Skurge the Executioner – a brutal Asgardian warrior armed with a double-bladed battle axe who was devoted to Amora, who used her wiles to manipulate him.
Crusher Creel – a fallen boxer turned criminal who thanks to Loki’s potion becomes the Absorbing Man with the ability to absorb the properties any metal he touches and grow to a massive size.
The Wrecking Crew – human criminals given enchanted weapons and enhanced strength by Loki and the Norn Queen. The Wrecker, Piledriver, Bulldozer, Thunderball became powerhouse enemies of Thor and the Avengers.
I would love to see Thor, Sif and the Warriors Three on a mission from Earth to Hel (which of course means Hela, Goddess of the Asgardian Underworld) on a quest to prevent Ragnarok – the great battle ending in the fall of Asgard.
