Hard comic book fans know a classic cosmic bad guy when they see one but some viewers of THOR: THE DARK WORLD may be saying, “Who is that?” just like when Thanos revealed his menacing grin the post-credit Avengers teaser.

In the first post-credit teaser after the Thunder God’s second adventure, Marvel treated us to…

Before I continue let me give a SPOILER ALERT!

For those who have not seen THOR: THE DARK WORLD stop reading now. Seriously.

Here it comes:

In the post credit teaser Lady Sif and Volstagg deliver an Infinity Gem to The Collector (Taneleer Tavan) played by Benicio Del Toro for safe keeping at the request of Odin (Loki in disguise?)

The Collector (created by Stan Lee and Don Heck) is known as one of the Elders of the Universe and controls the Power Primordial to create virtually unlimited effects. The Collector has the power of prophecy and see the rise of Thanos. To protect life in the universe, Tivan created a massive museum of life forms to keep them safe from Thanos. Tivan and the Avengers became enemies when he tried to add one of them to his collection.

As you can see in the clip, Tivan takes possession of one of the six Infinity Gems. Thanos is obessesed with seizing the gems to harness to the Infinity Gauntlet (seen briefly in Odin’s vault in the first THOR film.)

This is a big set-up for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY coming in August 2014. Benicio del Toro as The Collector plays a crucial role in that film but Ronan the Accuser of the Kree (played by Lee Pace) is said to be the main villain. I suspect the GOTG storyline will focus on the search for one or more of the Infinity Gems.

The trail of the next Marvel movies will likely be Avengers, Guardians working to stop Thanos from harnessing the gems and the Infinity Gauntlet – which he used to kill half the universe in the comic book epic by Jim Starlin.
