The new Thor is…
Jane Foster.
Dr. Foster is a longtime love interest of the Odinson and onetime doctor for the Avengers.
In Thor: God of Thunder #12, Jane revealed she is battling breast cancer to the Odinson.
In the final page of Thor #8 Jane vowed to keeping fighting as Thor even if it’s killing her.
Marvel has always been about the world outside your window and demonstrated a commitment to diversity. This could be a comic book first.
Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso said Jane becoming Thor was part of Jason Aaron’s long-term plan from the beginning.
He was asked about the message the publisher is sending by not just having a woman but a breast cancer patient in a signature role.
“I certainly think it gets people talking. One of the important aspects of this story is that Jane’s super heroics as Thor take a toll on her as Jane. Jane pays a physical price for her heroism. She gets out of bed and tries to live life to its fullest, tries to make a difference. I think there’s a metaphor there, not too far under the surface,” Alonso said on Marvel.com.
Jane is playing a major role in Secret Wars and will be part of the All-New, All-Different Avengers.
As the son of a breast cancer survivor, I have to admire Team Thor’s decision and hope it will raise awareness, understanding and support for women who are truly heroic in their battle with cancer.
