The first gay superhero leading a television series.

It’s a breakthrough in the making starring a DC Comics hero with a classic code-name.

At the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour, The CW made big news at a #DCTV panel. The network announced their second DC animated series for their digital channel, CW Seed.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is inspired by Grant Morrison’s update of the iconic character in THE MULTIVERSITY epic and will star the first gay super hero to headline a show.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray will reveal the story of Raymond “Ray” Terrill, a reporter who gains light-based powers after he exposes a plot by government scientists to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. No longer just reporting injustice, Ray’s new abilities inspire him to take action as a costumed hero.

The original Ray was a member of the Freedom Fighters including Uncle Sam, Black Condor, Human Bomb, Phantom Lady and Hourman.

This is the second series on CW Seed. Vixen will return for a second season set in the continuity of the same universe as Arrow and Flash on The CW. No word on if The Ray will exist in this reality.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray will debut on CW Seed in 2017.
