Logan will be killed in Death of Wolverine by Charles Soule and Steve McNiven. Marvel says it’s serious about killing off the fan-favorite X-Man. The final journey began this week as Three Months To Die began in Wolverine #8 by Paul Cornell and Kris Anka.
While the story potential of a World Without Wolverine is incredible, this geek has a burning question: Could someone else become the next Wolverine?
In an earlier chapter I explored how Logan’s arch-enemy Sabretooth could assume the role. If Doc Ock could become a Superior Spider-Man, could one of Logan’s rivals become a Savage, Ruthless or Superior Wolverine?
What about Daken?
Akihiro was cut from his mother’s stomach and pushed into a tortured childhood when he was cruelly called Daken aka “mongrel” or “bastard dog.” The boy would begin a lifetime of plotting to become powerful enough to find a seek revenge on his father – Wolverine.
Daken – but he’s dead you say?
Wolverine’s son had been resurrected many times already so why not one more? Maybe this time with a mind wipe? Or better yet – what if this a son Logan would have been proud of?
Hang with me here.
Daken was born in tragedy and bred to be a killer by Romulus.
What if there was another child who survived and escaped a tortured life?
Rick Remender, Jason Aaron and now Jason Latour are exploring that possibility with Evan, the clone of the child who is destined to become Apocalypse.
Even the evil son of Wolverine aspired to be his father – even if only to irk Logan. The son even become the lead of Wolverine’s solo title for a time. Daken masqueraded as Wolverine as a member of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers and Dark X-Men during – appropriately – Dark Reign.
The Apocalypse Twins resurrected Daken to become their Horsemen of Death in Uncanny Avengers. As Remender’s epic is building up to a major finale – how will Daken react if Wolverine does truly die?
If it’s a Daken you love to hate or a brand new Akhiro in the role of Wolverine, there’s incredible story potential. Who will wield the claws if anyone?
Stay tuned.
