Is Marvel putting an end to the Ultimate Universe and comics imprint?
After a series of teasers suggesting new versions of classic stories like Civil War, and Planet Hulk coming in 2015 – this teaser is for a brand new event that no one from Earth 1610 will survive.
Ultimate Comics was born in 2000 with reimagined and modern takes on classic Marvel heroes and villains. Ultimate Spider-Man (by Brian Michael Bendis) and Ultimate X-Men (by Mark Millar) were the first titles followed by the Ultimates, which became the inspiration for The Avengers movie and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
The entire line relaunched after the Ultimatum (by Jeph Loeb) event that saw the deaths of major heroes all the teams. And in this universe – dead was dead.
Peter Parker died in this universe and Miles Morales became the new Ultimate Spider-Man as the line was relaunched again.
In the aftermath of Age of Ultron, Galactus from the main Marvel Universe was thrown into the Ultimate Universe in Cataclysm which took the lives of more heroes and the line was relaunched again with three titles.
Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman is Marvel’s big event of 2015. The teaser shows heroes from multiple universes in battle. The Ultimate Universe could be a casualty of these Wars or could signal a new beginning.
Brian Michael Bendis is currently writing Jean Grey’s adventures in the Ultimate Universe with guest star Miles Morales in All-New X-Men. Bendis has been integral to the birth and rebirths of the Ultimate line and wrote Cataclysm and both Spider-Men. It’s a good bet Bendis will be the writer to end or reinvent the line but stay tuned.
