The Mad God of Titan is back in a brand new ongoing series this Fall.

After seizing the Infinity Gauntlet and other cosmic weapons what does Thanos have his evil eyes on now?

Is that the Phoenix Force in his reflection?

If Thanos wiped out half the universe with the Gauntlet in his devotion to Death,  imagine what he could do if he harnessed the power of destruction and rebirth of the Phoenix?

Marvel announced Thanos via Comicbook.com by Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato as part of the Marvel Now! in the aftermath of Civil War II.

The super villain has been broken and humbled but stands ready to reclaim his power and status among Marvel’s pantheon of powerhouses.

The Extraordinary X-Men, Hawkeye, Old Man Logan writer reveals how the Mad God’s past will impact his take on what’s next for the super villain that he compares to another classic sci-fi bad guy:

“Writing a villain book is completely different, and completely refreshing. The main attraction to doing this book was being able to dive into the dark side and tell a totally different type of [story] set in the Marvel U that is from a villain’s point of view. It’s forcing me to go to some new places with my writing and try new things.” Lemire told Comicbook.com/Marvel.com.

“As to what makes Thanos so compelling, the easy answer is that he is so powerful and so evil. This combination opens things up for a lot of story potential. But the truth is that it’s Thanos’ past that makes him so interesting. What motivates a god-like being like this? What makes him tick and what does he have left to fight for? These are compelling questions to me, and I think to the reader. But above all this series just has so much potential. Thanos can essentially become Marvel’s Darth Vader—its alpha villain.

I’ve dived pretty deep into Thanos’ publishing history to draw inspiration for the series. Of course it all starts with Jim Starlin, but I’ve also drawn from Keith Giffen’s run on THANOS as well as Jason Aaron’s THANOS RISING and the work Jonathan Hickman did in Infinity and elsewhere. I also took a good long look at Kieron Gillen’s DARTH VADER series as a template for what could be done with an ongoing villain series.”

Lemire said Thane (The villain’s son as revealed in Infinity), Starfox and the Eternals and Nebula will be in the cast of the book.

No official comments on the image of what could be the Phoenix Force in the preview art.

Lemire is writing Extraordinary X-Men featuring young Jean Grey, her older self infamously was possessed by the Phoenix.
