The biggest Marvel story of 2012 is the inspiration for the return of What If? Avengers vs. X-Men was a huge event for the Marvel Universe!

What if “other” heroes became the Phoenix Five?

This week is the first issue of Jimmy Palmiotti and Jorge Molina’s four-part story starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fighting the Children of the Atom…with all-new twists and turns!

Iron Man tried to kill the Phoenix Force before it could reach Earth and possess Hope but the entity split into five hosts: Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor – with devastating results – including the death of Professor X.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN Hellfire and Bamfs!

Wolverine & the X-Men #31 courtesy Marvel
Wolverine & the X-Men #31 courtesy Marvel

I love Wolverine and the X-Men #32. Jason Aaron and Nick Bradshaw always deliver action and humor packed stories. Chapter Two of The Hellfire Saga keeps the intrigue going and turns up the strange as we learn more the Hellfire Club’s endgame, the origin of the new villain, The Philistine and you may finally feel sorry for Quentin Quire. The arrogant hell-raising omega level mutant suffers at the hands of his new masters in his bid to save Idie.

One of the things I really want to declare is my love for how Jason Aaron uses the Bamfs! These little mini-Nightcrawlers have been haunting the Jean Grey School and stealing Logan’s whiskey since the premiere issue. I love how Wolverine uses to little gremlins’ vices against them in the search for his lost students and to deliver some painful payback to the Hellfire Club. I could go on and on about how much I love Aaron’s writing of the popular X-Men you love (Logan, Kitty, Bobby) but I wanted to praise him for the little moments and the background characters like Doop, Toad and the Bamfs that make Wolverine and the X-Men the strangest and most consistently enjoyable X-book.

UNCANNY X-MEN Demon Therapy!

I admit – I’m not a big fan of the supernatural themed X-Men stories. I’ve never been a fan of Magik. Illyana’s history is confusing and she’s just not likable. There’s nothing redeeming about the demon sorceress/mutant teleporter with an evil persona – see what I mean – confusing, huh?

Brian Michael Bendis and Frazier Irving have changed my mind about supernatural stories and Magik in just one perfect issue. Uncanny X-Men #7 is a beautifully written and drawn story of sacrifice, identity and cry for help. Every hero has demons but Illyana’s are literal. Because of Magik the troubled kids at the new Xavier School learn how being a mutant can be hell – literally. Continue reading UNCANNY X-MEN Demon Therapy!
