The King of the Zombie genre reclaims the throne this week in a new Marvel comic book series. George Romero team ups with artists Alex Maleev (Daredevil) and Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies) for Empire of the Dead.

“George A. Romero singlehandedly created the zombie genre that’s captured the public imagination for decades,” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “Now, his unique vision for the silver screen comes to life on the comic book page – a chilling rumination on human nature and man’s place in the food chain, served with a terrifying twist.” Continue reading George Romero’s EMPIRE OF DEAD: The Horror Begins!

“WORLD WAR Z” Review

World War Z is a triumph after all and a brilliant new addition to the zombie genre. Brad Pitt plays our tour guide in a new world going to undead hell. Pitt’s hero takes us to the darkest depths where life has been forsaken and pockets of humanity where hope desperately tries to remain alive. Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a United Nations investigator who left behind a career traveling to the world’s most dangerous war zones. When the undead attack the living and multiply at an uncontrollable rate Lane gets his family to safety and gets recruited by his former employers to lead a search for the cause and possible cure to the outbreak.

In so many ways this is not a “zombie” movie and certainly different from any zombie movie you’ve seen before. It’s a frantic Continue reading “WORLD WAR Z” Review

Devour Fanboys Vs Zombies #1

I know I’ve dreamed and brainstormed with fellow geeks about surviving an undead invasion in Seattle. An up and coming writer is taking this geek fantasy and created an outrageous adventure with: Fanboys Vs. Zombies.

Feuding friends with baggage reconnect at the world’s biggest comic book convention when a zombie outbreak erupts.  Fanboys and girls who think they know zombie survival skills from comics and videos are put to the test in this hilarious adventure from Boom Studios.

This weekend I met writer Sam Humphries at Emerald City Comicon. I was in a geek haze when I the Fanboys Vs. Zombies cover caught my eye (I wish I had got the ECCC variant now!) and recognized his name at the booth signage from my blogging. I talked with Humphries about this project, grabbed a copy, got his signature and talked with a rising star. Humphries is co-writing Marvel’s Ultimates with Jonathan Hickman then taking over the book.

I’ve been reading that he’s the next big thing and sure enough Humphries was on Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel with Dan Slot, Jeff Parker, Rick Remender, C.B. Cebulski, Chris Yost and Greg Rucka.

Not only is Fanboys Vs. Zombies a fun read from two rising stars (Jerry Gaylord’s art reminds me of Humberto Ramos from Gen 13 and DV8 days) More selling points: this issue is only a buck! I haven’t paid just a dollar for a comic book in years! Fanboys Vs. Zombies #1 invades local comic stores this week. Grab it. Devour it. Stay alive for next month’s issue.

Zombie Outlaw: Two Dudes, a Babe and a Curse

Zombie Outlaw #1 courtesy Comixpress.com

Matt is a shy college geek smitten with K.T. his gorgeous lab partner. Will is Matt’s overeager resident advisor who promises to help him win the girl if he gets him through his graduate thesis.

Will’s obsession with a local horror legend leads to an underground lair. Just when the guys think they’ve got the key to the mystery all hell bites loose. Trying to win the heart of a hot girl unearths a cold dead curse buried in the college library.

This is a fun adventure with a geeky guy to cheer for, a hot chick and zombies on campus. Matt and K.T. are like Peter Parker and M.J. with the humor, curves ramped up to comedic levels.

Over the top art in unique panel layouts mixed with quick pacing make this a fun escapade. A story of bookish guys, boobs and brains with a sense of mystery, comedy and horror.

Congratulations Brian and Benny on delivering a fun ride.

The artist, Benny Jordan (aka B. Paul Jordan) is working on another project, with Jason Dube of Scattered Comic Studios, a great new comic with the title of “Shadow Hunters.”

Disclaimer: I was approached by the author to give his book a try. I’m always open to supporting new talent. I have no financial gain from the sales or success of Zombie Outlaw – I just hope they contain the undead outbreak to Irvine, Ca!

Casting the The Governor on The Walking Dead

The Governor ruthlessly rose into the pantheon of the most sinister villains in graphic novel history. The sadistic survival group leader appear may in the third season of the AMC series. Movieweb reports John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone, Deadwood) is being eyed for the role but a zombie legend wants his shot at the Governor.

Tom Savini is campaigning for the role. Savini is the make-up master who created the zombie carnage in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. Savini’s acting credits include From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror and Land of the Dead.

“I have been campaigning to be the Governor on that damn thing with Greg Nicotero for over a year. Everytime I see the graphic novel, and I see a picture of the Governor, who looks just like me, I send Greg a picture. I just won’t give up. Last time I talked to him about it, when I was in Los Angeles, he said they were going after a name for that part. I said, “Who?” He said John Hawkes. Well, I never heard of John Hawkes. But then he reminds me that we were in From Dusk Till Dawn together. He is the guy at the beginning in the store that fires on them. Apparently he was up for an Academy Award. He was up for something called Winter’s Bone. That’s whom they are going after for The Governor. But everyone I talk to, the people that read the graphic novels…They’ve all said that I would be the perfect Governor. Because he is tough and brutal. And…I look just like the graphic depiction of him!”
