Avengers vs X-Men #5 Two rival super hero teams battle on the moon. One team fights for the survival of their face. One team fights for the fate of the Earth. The Phoenix Force arrives for the fiery climax to Act One. Who becomes the host of the cosmic entity and how does this lead into the next act: No More Avengers?

Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1 One of the most controversial decisions in recent comic book industry. DC Comics is going back into the Watchmen universe to tell new prequel stories with some of the biggest names in comics on board. Love or hate the idea – it’s time to judge the story. This is the first series focusing on the team of heroes from the 1940’s that led to the Watchmen.

Earth 2 #2 Classic Silver Age heroes reborn. Fan favorite Alan Scott is now reintroduced as a gay super hero and the only Green Lantern of this world. This issue reveals the origin of this world’s Flash, Jay Garrick and the threat that would wipe out this alternative Earth.

Harbinger #1 Pete is a young guy struggling to make it. Toyo Harada is a billionaire with a global empire. Both share a mental based power that could reshape the world. A kid off the streets is offered the alliance of a lifetime with a man who has everything…but there’s got to be a catch! Valiant Comics is back. Harbinger was my favorite book and Harada was the best villain of that universe.

Invincible Iron Man #518 Tony Stark may be celebrating a victory in The Avengers and Iron Man 3 on the big screen but there’s a new man in the armor in the comics. The new Iron Man blasts in after the Spymaster leaves a bloody trail in Stark Resilient and Marvel is teasing the assassination of Tony Stark?

I use this photo because Matt Fraction is the writer of AvX #5 and Invincible Iron Man #518

First Official Iron Man 3 Set Photo

Iron Man 3 courtesy Marvel Studios

The Avengers is still soaring and breaking records but Robert Downey Jr is back on the job. Marvel Studios revealed the first official set photo of Iron Man 3. Tony Stark is looking at his many versions of the Iron Man armor. Shane Black is directing this time but Jon Favreau is back on camera as Happy Hogan. Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle are back too.

Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale, Ashley Hamilton, Rebecca Hall and Ben Kingsley (is he or isn’t he the Mandarin?) are new to the series. The film is said to be based on Iron Man Extremis. Dale is playing Coldblood but sporting the Iron Patriot armor and Hamilton is playing Firepower.

Seeing the photo above and all those heavy metal bad guys make me wonder if the classic Armor Wars story may play a part in this new film. The Iron Man armor had been stolen to create weaponry for various super villains. The David Micheline penned storyline saw Tony Stark go after the foes using his stolen tech.

Shane Black is directing the Armored Avenger’s third solo film. Filming began this week in North Carolina. No word on how big his role will be but good to have him on board.

Iron Man’s New Leading Lady?

Iron Man from Marvel.com

Jessica Chastain was in then out due to scheduling. Now Rebecca Hall is in talks to play a scientist in Iron Man 3 according to Variety. What does this mean for Gwynneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts? I was surprised how much Pepper screen time was in Marvel’s The Avengers. Tony and Pepper seemed happy in Stark Tower but could this new brainy beauty catch the playboy’s eye?

The character is part of a team (including Guy Pearce) of scientists that create nanotechnology that gets in the hands of terrorists. The next Tony Stark adventure is based on Iron Man Extremis. Ben Kingsley is on board as the villain.

I liked Rebecca Hall in Ben Affleck’s The Town. Below is a YouTube video of her promoting that excellent film.

Mark Ruffalo On His HULK Approach and Solo Movie

Marvel's Avengers The Hulk courtesy Marvel Studios

Mark Ruffalo plays Dr. Bruce Banner and the Hulk in Marvel’s The Avengers. The actor talked with IGN Movies about his approach to playing the heroic monster and Banner’s state when the action picks up in the movie.

“Yeah, it’s hard to watch a movie with a guy who doesn’t want to be there. I think Banner’s aging and living with this thing since — now it’s been two years since his last “one.” We’re kind of going for this world weariness of accepting — trying to get to the point where he can live with it, and maybe master it. Come to peace with it. And so there’s this kind of nice ironic wryness to Banner. He’s not sulking and miserable, you know. I think that’s sort of a throwback — we had talked about it being a throwback to Bill Bixby, which was the Banner that I grew up on basically. He had kind of a charm about him, and this world weariness. He was on the run, but he was still able to flirt sometimes and smile sometimes, and occasionally he’d crack a joke. When you have a movie where there’s so many characters you end up getting about 10 minutes screen time with your particular character. So in the screen time that we have we’re trying to bring out this charm in him, and maybe this idea that he wants to be a superhero. I mean, he looks at Stark and he’s like, “That’s the dude who did what I was intending to do. He’s the model. He made it work.” So Banner and Stark have a very cool relationship in the movie. ”

When asked about a Hulk solo movie:

“Why not! It was the one character — you know, I was a comic book fan when I was a kid and I always loved the Hulk. When The Incredible Hulk, that show, came on, I would not miss that. And so if I was going to find myself in that world, this would be the guy that I would be most interested in doing. To make a very short answer long: Yeah, I’d love to have him do his own movie.”

Ruffalo confirmed his Hulk will talk in The Avengers.

For the complete interview here’s the IGN link.

This Geek’s Opinion: I love that influence of Bill Bixby. The Incredible Hulk was a can’t miss show for me as a kid. It’s has one of the best theme songs ever. As for a Hulk solo movie? I would love to see Marvel to get inspiration from Peter David’s long run on The Incredible Hulk. I loved when Banner and Hulk were merged and he was part of the Pantheon. I could see a Hulk-led Pantheon vs. SHIELD epic. Here’s a link to one of the many Peter David Incredible Hulk visionaries collections if you want an idea of the story.

Iron Man 3 starring Ben Kingsley

Iron Man from Marvel.com

Ben Kingsley is in final talks to play the villain in Iron Man 3 but he will NOT be playing the Mandarin according to Variety. The story will be based loosely on Extremis the 6 part series by Warren and Adi Granov involving the spread of nanobots.

Fans – me included – hoped Tony would face the Mandarin this time. Hints were placed in the first film. The terrorist holding Tony hostage worked for a group called the Ten Rings. The Mandarin is famed for his ten power rings.

Extremis features art by Adi Granov who did design work for Iron Man 1, 2 and The Avengers.

Iron Man 3 is blasts into theaters on May 3, 2013.

I was lucky to meet Adi Granov recently at Emerald City Comicon in Seattle and score one of his amazing sketchbooks.

Here’s the Amazon link to Extremis if you’d like to get an idea of Tony’s third film adventure.

Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 3?

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner on sete in The Avengers courtesy Marvel.com

Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Black Widow in Iron Man 3 according to Latino Review who have a cast list. Black Widow was an undercover SHIELD agent posing as Tony Stark’s assistant in Iron Man 2. The third solo movie starring the armored Avenger starts filming in North Carolina this May.

In a previous interview Johansson expressed her willingness to star in a Black Widow solo film. This post also looks at great stories that could make a cool film.

Assassination of Tony Stark!

A big follow-up! Tony Stark assassinated?

What would make Tony Stark give up being Iron Man? Matt Fraction previewed his next arc Long Way Down on Marvel.com in an earlier story below.

Today Marvel’s full June solicitations deliver an ominous declaration.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #518 & 519
•The New Iron Man explodes into action!
• Spymaster’s rampage within Stark Resilient comes to its bloody end!
• THE ASSASSINATION OF TONY STARK!

Previous Story:

“As we’ll see at the end of Demon, General Babbage, [Tony’s] primary antagonist at the Pentagon, and Justine Hammer of Hammer Industries, present Tony with an ultimatum,” says Fraction. “Accepting it is the only way he can remain in control of the Iron Man without losing everything. And Tony very quickly finds that arrangement to be unacceptable. The ramifications of that are what ‘Long Way Down’ is all about.

“So basically…Tony quits,” said Matt Fraction.

A mole inside Stark Resilient will be exposed. Fraction says expect dire repercussions:

“People start dying. Bethany Cabe starts earning her paycheck.”

“All the pots from the very beginning of Invincible Iron Man are coming to a boil,” he says. “Mandarin and Stane’s alliance, the revamped and upgraded rogues gallery, the Hammer girls, Spymaster’s infiltration—‘Long Way Down’ deals with all of it.”

Fraction says there will be a new Iron Man. Who will wear the armor? For Fraction’s entire interview here’s the Marvel.com linkLong Way Down begins in Invincible Iron Man #516.

Thanks to Comics Newsarama for the updated June solicits.
