Neil Gaiman Returns to DOCTOR WHO!

Matt Smith as The Doctor courtesy BBC America

Neil Gaiman crafted one of my favorite and heartfelt episodes of Doctor Who ever! The author of The Doctor’s Wife will write a new adventure for the Time Lord featuring the Cybermen!

Warwick Davis, Tamzin Outhwaite and Jason Watkins will join Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman for the episode.

“Cybermen were always the monsters that scared me the most! Not just because they were an awesome military force, but because sometimes they could be sleek and silver and right behind you without you even knowing. ’ He added, ‘And with one of the all-time classic monsters returning, and a script from one of our finest novelists, it’s no surprise we have attracted such stellar names as Tamzin, Jason and Warwick,” Executive Producer Steven Moffatt told the BBC.

Doctor Who returns at Christmas and then for 8 episodes in 2013.

Doctor Who Annual 2012 Preview

courtesy IDW Publishing

An all-star lineup of creators will pay tribute to the Eleventh Doctor in an all-new Doctor Who Annual 2012 from IDW Publishing out this week. This oversize issues includes three stories.

While Matt Smith will say goodbye to Amy and Rory on the television series, writer Tony Lee is leaving the Doctor Who franchise with this Annual. The writer has helmed series, one-shots, miniseries and even the current crossover between the Time Lord and the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“It’s an escape story,” Lee tells Comic Book Resources of his final story, “The Doctor willingly enters 1962 Alcatraz to rescue a friend after he learns of his death in a riot. It’s ‘Escape From Alcatraz‘ with timey-wimey fun and shimmer-suited aliens thrown in. And a familiar face or two. I wanted to do something ‘big’ in my 11 pages, rather than have people just sitting at a table talking to each other. I like the running, jumping, climbing trees school of Doctor Who.”

The all-star creative team includes legendary comics writer Len Wein, Dr. Who novelist Richard Dinnick, artists Matthew Dow Smith and Mitch Gerads.

Andy Diggle and Mark Buckingham will be the creative team on a new series spinning out of the annual which includes a prelude of their upcoming story.

Who Is Doctor Who?

courtesy SFX.co.uk and BBC

An alien who travel through time and space in a blue box that’s bigger on the inside? Who could have imagined that idea would work?

For his 50th Anniversary Doctor Who is getting a television bio movie according to Deadline. An Adventure in Time and Space will air on the BBC and dive into the creation of the character and television show. Eleven actors have played the Time Lord. The new season starring Matt Smith arrives this fall on the BBC and BBC America.

Doctor Who Star Mary Tamm Dies

Mary Tamm as Romana with K-9 in Doctor Who “The Ribos Operation” courtesy BBC.

The universe is little less bright because a beautiful star has gone out. Mary Tamm played the Time Lord Romana on Doctor Who. Tom Baker was my first Doctor. Romana was my first Who companion. Tamm appeared with Baker in six stories in the late 1970’s.

My first episode was The Pirate Planet. It was the second storyline in the ongoing Key to Time epic in which The White Guardian gave the Doctor a female Time Lord, Romana, to assist in his quest to find segments that would create the Key to Time and restore balance to the universe. I think my favorite episode with her was The Stones of Blood.

Mary Tamm died at age 62 after a battle with cancer. I will always have a special place in my geek heart for her as Romana, my first Doctor Who companion.

Doctor Who Meets the Enterprise Crew

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who Assimilation2 #2 courtesy IDW Publishing

This is not a simulation malfunction! Two of science fiction’s greatest icons are together in a comic book crossover.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #2 is out this week from IDW publishing. Chapter Two begins with an extended detour to a Federation world where a routine visit turns into a near disaster under an alien ocean for Riker, Worf and Data. We meet a new species, learn of Starfleet’s desperate deal with them and hints of what time (as in Trek continuity) this tale takes place. Chapter One began with the Doctor, Amy and Rory’s adventure in ancient Egypt. I’m assuming these jaunts will tie into the main story.

The Enterprise crew recover from the away mission with a visit to the holodeck and a Dixon Hill program. It’s not too long before a police box of intruders appears thinking they’ve traveled to old world San Francisco. The interplay between the Doctor, his companions and the Enterprise crew is clever and charming. The writers capture the essence of these beloved characters while carefully sowing the seeds that something is very wrong.

Before the Time Lord and Captain Picard can dive into the mystery the Enterprise is warping to a Federation world under attack from the Borg and the Cybermen. Aside from the detour this issue delivers the fun and charm I was expecting and the stage is set for a great crossover. The preview of issue #3 will really engage even older old school fans of Who and Trek!

Doctor Who’s New Companion

Dr. Who and his new companion Courtesy BBC and TV Fanatic

Almost time to say goodbye to Amy and Rory. The one constant about Doctor Who is new traveling companions. Jenna-Louise Coleman is the latest human to join the Time Lord on this adventures in time and space. TV Fanatic has this new photo of the actress with Matt Smith.

No details yet on how the transition will happen but:

“Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter w/ the Weeping Angels in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive & I mean it this time,” Tweeted creator Steven Moffat in March.

On a slightly different note but related to Doctor Who: Don’t miss the Imperial Dalek at EMP Museum in Seattle. The artifact is part of the new Icons of Science Fiction exhibit. The Opening Night party was a blast with classic episodes of Doctor Who broadcast on the walls of Skychurch.
