Expect a heavy hitter to hammer down on Chris Hemsworth in THOR 2 but it will not be the big purple bad at the end of The Avengers. I won’t reveal the ending just in case you’re not among the billions that have seen Earth’s Mightiest Movie.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige tells Empire “But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist.”
Who will it be? Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale)is (rumored, in talks, final negotiations – all depending on which site you read) up for a role in Thor 2. Here are my thoughts on which villain he might play.
Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to play the villain in Thor 2 according to Variety. Mikkelson played Le Chiffre in Daniel Craig’s first James Bond film Casino Royale. The Danish actor appeared in the Clash of the Titans remake.
I have to admit I’m scratching my head trying to think of which villain Mikkelsen might play: Malekith the Accursed, leader of the Dark Elves or Mephisto (this character could reappear in multiple movie franchises since he’s the Marvel version of the devil.) What if this actor is voicing Fafnir the dragon?
Let the speculation begin!
Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as Loki and still be a major antagonist for the Thunder God. Chris Hemsworth talked about the potential for Loki’s redemption for his actions in The Avengers. A bigger new bad guy could united Thor and Loki in the sequel…until Loki betrays him again!
I would love to see Alexander Skarsgard as Balder the Brave and Charlize Theron as Amora the Enchantress.
Avengers vs X-Men #4 may be more battles between heroes across the globe but in space no one can hear an Asgardian God of Thunder die.
Thor is among a squad of Avengers on a suicide mission to stop the Phoenix from reaching Earth. We’ve already seen a variant cover with Thor looking down right small against the oncoming Phoenix Force.
Marvel provided Comic Book Resources with interior pages showing Thor’s struggle against the entity…and it doesn’t look good for him. When you see Thor’s face, it’s hard to imagine what can amaze this Asgardian after all he’s seen.
Chris Hemsworth is flying high as Thor in Marvel’s The Avengers but he’s not so heroic and regal in his next big screen role. Hemsworth is confronted by Charlize Theron (Prometheus) in a new scene from Snow White and the Huntsman courtey of Yahoo and Universal.
A big year for Hemsworth (he was also in Cabin in the Woods.) I’m excited for this dark and gritty take on the classic story. Director Rupert Sanders appears to have created a nightmarish fairy tale. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st. Kristin Stewart of Twilight is the lead. This is a version of the tale I can see in Fables.
Avengers 2 was confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger during a conference call to report quarterly earnings according to The Hollywood Reporter. With a global box office of $700 + million in two weeks for the Avengers I bet that was a happy call.
Iger confirmed a third Iron Man, a second Thor film are scheduled for 2013. A Captain America sequel is in the works for 2014. No timeline was given for an Avengers sequel.
The CEO added there are plans for Avengers inspired attractions at Disney theme parks.

How about an Iron Man flight simulator or Stark Tower ride?
With a $200.3 million dollar opening it’s hard to imagine (and if you’re coming to comic book site) that you didn’t see The Avengers on the big screen.
Let’s talk about that ending and have some fun geek-speculation! J
Just in case you didn’t see Earth’s Mightiest Movie here’s a WARNING!!!
SPOILER AHEAD
SERIOUSLY
IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW THE POST CREDIT SCENE/ENDING OF THE AVENGERS DON’T SCROLL DOWN ANY MORE
FOR REAL
OK HERE IT IS…
I have to admit I was shocked to see the mystery villain appear every so briefly but sporting a sinister grin. The Chitauri leader is seeing talking to a menacing figure saying the humans are not to be underestimated and to face them would be “to court death itself.”
The figure turns. Thanos is revealed! I think I exclaimed “oh s…!” My non-comic book reading friend said “who is that supposed to be?”
Thanos is the Mad God of Titan and he’s obsessed with death. In the Marvel Universe Death is an entity and he courts her. Thanos debuted in the pages of Iron Man but you need a lot more than the Avengers if you take on this cosmic monster.
Thanos was born on Titan, a moon of Saturn. He’s a member of the Eternals (a God-like but human looking race ) but was born with a Deviant (their monstrous looking cousins) gene so in a way Thanos is a cosmic mutant.
Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, The Silver Surfer and many more heroes banded together in The Infinity Gauntlet when Thanos wiped out half the universe as an offering to Mistress Death. The gauntlet holds 5 gems of power. The artifact was seen briefly in Odin’s vault in Thor.
Adam Warlock and Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) are key players in any Thanos storyline so can we expect them to appear in upcoming sequels to Thor, Iron Man and Captain America?
Warlock is an artificial warrior created by the Enclave, a team of scientists, and fought Thor. Warlock became a hero, member of Guardians of the Galaxy and the Infinity Watch.
Mar-Vell is a Kree warrior who turned against his alien empire and became a champion of Earth and an Avenger. Thanos was at Mar-Vell’s side as he died of cancer in the classic The Death of Captain Marvel, Marvel’s first graphic novel.
But what about Silver Surfer last seen in Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer? Not sure about the rights to this character but Norrin Radd is a key player in a battle against Thanos.
After the amazing portrayal of the Hulk in The Avengers I can see the same process turn an actor like in the cosmic big bad guy. Thor displayed the Infinity gauntlet in Odin’s vault so expect more cosmic seeds for a cosmic showdown with the Mad God planted in the sequel.
If you’d like to read more about the Mad God here’s his bio link on Marvel.com. A huge credit goes to the legendary Jim Starlin, who revitalized Thanos, Adam Warlock and wrote the classic Avengers Annual #7, The Death of Captain Marvel and The Infinity Gauntlet. Starlin’s contributions to the Marvel Universe are majestic and maybe the most appropriate word – COSMIC!
If you’re familiar with Thanos who do you think should play him? Do you like the idea of a cosmic size Avengers sequel?
When the Hulk leaps into action to save Iron Man in the Avengers trailer – the screams from the crowd huddled around my computer were filled with joy! The Hulk must really be awesome in Earth’s Mightiest Movie because Mark Ruffalo revealed he’s signed a 6 picture deal with Marvel Films to Collider.
(Ruffalo also reveals there’s a deleted scene with the great Harry Dean Stanton.)
So Avengers 2 is a given but how about a Hulk solo movie? What comic book story would you want to see on the big screen?
I love Peter David’s run on The Incredible Hulk. I especially enjoyed when the merged Hulk – Banner’s mind in control of the monster body – was allied with a group of heroes called the Pantheon. This organization answered to no government and their missions often brought them into conflict with other heroes. I could see a great Pantheon-SHIELD conflict orchestrated by The Leader, a scientist mutated by gamma radiation in a very different way. While the members of the Pantheon took names inspired by Greek mythology, their leader Agamemnon, was half-Asgardian. See the Thor cameo?
Greg Pak’s Planet Hulk would be an out of this world – literally – adventure for the Green Goliath. It’s already an animated movie. The Illumanati (Tony Stark, Reed Richard, Doctor Strange, Professor X, Namor) decide the rampaging Hulk has done enough damage and blast him off to an uninhabited planet to live in peace. The thing about programmed spaceships with a Hulk on board – they can go off course. The Hulk goes through a wormhole and lands on a barbaric world, is forced to become a gladiator, becomes a hero and leads a revolution against the planet’s cruel leader. In the sequel World War Hulk, the Hulk and his Warbound (allies from the arena) come back to Earth to lay down some serious vengeance on the Illumanati. Hulk doesn’t realize until later that he fathered a son on Sakaar until Skaar arrives on Earth ready to resolve his daddy issues with some serious fighting!
Seattle’s real and fictional super heroes take the spotlight this week.
Fiction: Someone or something is carving up Seattle’s super heroes. Marvel’s mutant detectives (including former X-Men) head to the Emerald City to investigate in this week’s X-Factor #235 by Peter David.
Seattle’s Litterbug and The Insignia were introduced briefly only to be seemingly attacked in last month’s issue. In this week chapter a new villain named Scattershot is introduced. Given the cover – this new foe looks like a hybrid of two X-Factor members.
Fact: The Pacific Northwest is the home of a real super hero movement. Phoenix Jones and his patrols of Seattle generated big new coverage. Here’s a link to the KOMONEWS.COM stories about his impact and the controversy. Citizen Heroes is a new documentary project exploring the real life superhero movement in Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon.
Some of the real life heroes will be introducing Marvel movies this week when Avengers Assemble! at SIFF Cinema takes over the Uptown Theater in Seattle. You can meet the local pop heroes before watching a different Marvel movie (Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger) each night before Earth’s Mightiest Movie arrives.
