The Walking Dead Creator on David Morrissey as The Governor

  The Walking Dead fans are buzzing with the announcement of The Governor appearing in Season Three on AMC. Creator Robert Kirkman praised British actor David Morrissey.

  “More than any other actor, David Morrissey came in and wanted to embrace everything that there is to the Governor,” Kirkman told MTV News. “He knew this is a complicated character, and he knew this was a character that people are going to hate to love.”

 “He recognized that this character is a villain,” he added. “A lot of people came in and were like, ‘But he’s a good guy inside, right?’ They want that nuance, and that’s definitely important. We definitely have that. The Governor isn’t a one-note character; there are a lot of layers to that onion. But this is a sadistic guy. David Morrissey, more than any other actor, really wanted to sink his teeth into that role. He wants to embrace everything there is about the Governor.”

  The Governor commits unspeakable acts against the survivors fans know and love in the graphic novel series. Kirkman says the Governor’s television counterpart will be just as sadistic.

  “It was really important to me that no one gets the sense that we’re neutering the Governor from the comics or holding anything back in any way,” said Kirkman. “We’re definitely going to do the character justice, and season three will be that much crazier and that much more intense because of it.”

 A big question for fans is if Michonne will make her debut on the series too since she’s part of the action in the Governor arc in the books.

The Walking Dead Should Never Have Been a TV Show – But I’m Glad It Is!

  It’s a big weekend for Robert Kirkman. The first ever Image Expo is underway celebrating the 20th anniversary of the publisher. The Walking Dead fans are in a frenzy with news that David Morrissey has been cast as the Governor and will join the series next season.

 I wanted to share part of this Comic Book Resources interview with Kirkman. I think it sums up why the show is a hit. 

“The Walking Dead should never have been made in to a TV show. I’ll just say that right now. When I was doing the comic, never in a million years did I think that anyone would ever go “oh, zombies on TV? Good idea!” It’s not a good idea. It’s a huge risk. It’s gotta be gory, it’s gotta have characters dying. It’s like you said, it’s a very hard thing to adapt for TV.”

“Anyways, it took AMC to have the guts to say “oh you know what, that is a good idea, that would be kind of neat, we would like to try and make that a TV show.” So no, I haven’t gotten any pushback. They read a large portion of the comic; I think issue 65 was out by the time they were trying to make it in to a show. They knew what they were getting in to. They loved the comic and they wanted to adapt that. There was no push back because they knew what they were doing. I can’t gush about AMC enough.”

 As I fan I have to agree with the praise for AMC for allowing the same unpredictability you have in comics on television. If you’re a reader of Kirkman’s series it’s hard to imagine a network allowing the kind of brutality the Governor delivers in the comics to be on television.

The Governor Cast on The Walking Dead

  David Morrissey is The Governor! The British actor has landed highly anticipated role on AMC’s The Walking Dead according to Deadline. Morrissey will join the series in Season Three.

In Robert Kirkman’s graphic novels the Governor is the leader of Woodbury, a small settlement of survivors who becomes the antagonist for hero Rick Grimes.

Sci-Fi fans may remember Morrissey from the Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Two Doctors.

  Fans of the comic book series have been eagerly waiting for word of when the villain would join the show. I can’t even begin to describe just how sadistic this character is in the series. The Governor represents a theme in great zombie fiction. What humanity is capable of is sometimes more horrific that the so-called monsters.

A Geek’s Pondering:

With Jon Bernthal starring in a pilot for a new series could it be that Shane’s days on the show are numbered now that the Governor will become Rick’s main antagonist?

Fan favorite Michonne is introduced before the Governor in the books so can we expect to see her join the series next season too.

The Walking Dead: Rick & Shane Clash

  In a brilliant and chilling scene Rick transformed from the noble hero trying to protect his family into something cold and inhuman. Lori seemed to be pushing and pleading Rick to ‘do something’ about Shane.

  Show Runner Glen Mazzarra talked with TV Guide about the upcoming Rick and Shane clash.

  “It will be played out in the next episode. The next episode is an episode that really puts Shane and Rick at odds, and Rick is tired of secrets, and a lot will come spilling out.”

  Jon Bernthal is talks for Frank Daramount’s new TNT series pilot L.A. Noir. Does that mean Shane will not survive the showdown with Rick?

  “Let’s say this: You know the Shane character was killed off in the comic book very, very early. We are a show that is going to surprise people. People can speculate. I haven’t read the Frank script, but it is conceivable that Bernthal’s character gets offed in that pilot. I haven’t read it. So I don’t want to say anything about secrets or spoilers or anything like that, but I think fans will be satisfied with our story, and I’m just going to focus on that, not other material.”

The Walking Dead Boss Says Rick Vs. Shane Is On!

  Team Rick or Team Shane? Whose side are you on? The Walking Dead returns Sunday, February 12th with the best friends on opposite sides. Rick is questioning his leadership. Shane is sinking deeper into the dark side. Does Shane deserve a chance at redemption or should he deserve a fate like or worse than Otis?

  “That rivalry is certainly at the heart of the show,” producer Glen Mazzara tells MSNBC’s The Clicker. “Certain people feel Shane was right to break open the barn, but Rick’s the one who stepped forward and put down Sophia. You have these two alpha males sparring for position and we get a lot of great story out of that.”

Thief of Thieves Debuts

The writers of The Walking Dead and Morning Glories team up for a brand new series debuting today from Image Comics. Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer tell the story of a master thief yearning for what he can’t steal. He wants his son and ex-wife but can the criminal reconnect before the FBI catches him.

 

Shawn Martinbrough is the artist. Thief of Thieves #1 is on stores today.

 

Casting the The Governor on The Walking Dead

  The Governor ruthlessly rose into the pantheon of the most sinister villains in graphic novel history. The sadistic survival group leader appear may in the third season of the AMC series. Movieweb reports John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone, Deadwood) is being eyed for the role but a zombie legend wants his shot at the Governor.

  Tom Savini is campaigning for the role. Savini is the make-up master who created the zombie carnage in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. Savini’s acting credits include From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror and Land of the Dead.

  “I have been campaigning to be the Governor on that damn thing with Greg Nicotero for over a year. Everytime I see the graphic novel, and I see a picture of the Governor, who looks just like me, I send Greg a picture. I just won’t give up. Last time I talked to him about it, when I was in Los Angeles, he said they were going after a name for that part. I said, “Who?” He said John Hawkes. Well, I never heard of John Hawkes. But then he reminds me that we were in From Dusk Till Dawn together. He is the guy at the beginning in the store that fires on them. Apparently he was up for an Academy Award. He was up for something called Winter’s Bone. That’s whom they are going after for The Governor. But everyone I talk to, the people that read the graphic novels…They’ve all said that I would be the perfect Governor. Because he is tough and brutal. And…I look just like the graphic depiction of him!”
