The smashing success of Man of Steel could determine the big screen future of a team-up with the Dark Knight or the Justice League but you don’t have to wait too much longer to see Kal and Bruce!

DC‘s two most iconic heroes team up in a brand new Batman/Superman series by Greg Pak and Jae Lee out Wednesday. This will be the definitive story of how Bruce and Clark first met in The New 52. Pak reveals the timing of the series:

“Our story takes place around the time of Grant Morrison’s Action Comics #1. So it takes place when both of these guys are very young and very new to the whole superhero thing,” Pak told MTV GEEK .

“We’re going to have this fantastic opportunity to see how these very young guys view each other. Imagine finding out for the first time about some guy who runs around in a bat costume fighting crime or some guy with these insane powers doing the same thing. Each hero’s reaction to the other is going to surprise folks a little bit, because they’re both so new. Their reactions to each other are going to be a lot more dangerous than you’re used to thinking about when you think about Batman and Superman.”

David Finch Exclusive: His Justice League of America Favorites

Fan favorite artist David Finch appeared at Fan Expo Vancouver this past weekend. There were huge lines for Finch as fans eagerly waited for a chance to have the acclaimed creator sign their books, get sketches and talk with him about his stellar career. Finch is now a DC Comics exclusive artist (Batman: The Dark Knight, Justice League of America) after amazing runs at Top Cow (Cyberforce) and Marvel Comics (New Avengers, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimatum, Moon Knight.)

Finch joined legendary Iron Man artist and X-O Manowar co-creator Bob Layton and Ultimate Comics X-Men, Incredible Hulk cover artist Kaare Andrews for an engaging sketch duel panel. The three creators gave fans a choice: they spend the entire session working on one sketch each or a rapid fire 5 minutes per sketch. The sketch duel ends with lucky fans leaving with the sketches so the crowd unanimously voted for the chance at 15 fans receiving 15 sketches over three fans getting three sketches.

The battle began with requests for Catwoman, Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine and finally Captain America while the creators shared career insights and answered fan questions in a revealing and hilarious session.

After enjoying the panel I got the opportunity to talk one on one with Finch back at his table. I did have to wait my turn. As you can see above this young fan was extremely chatty and excited as she watched Finch create a sketch just for her.

After a great run on Batman: The Dark Knight which he co-wrote with Paul Jenkins, Finch is now drawing a new Justice League of America written by Geoff Johns. The eclectic cast includes Catwoman, Katana, Stargirl, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, Vibe and the new Green Lantern Simon Baz. I asked Finch which members of the team were his favorites so far. His answer included a surprise and a tease for a dramatic event planned for the youngest hero on the roster:

It’s almost the second anniversary of DC Comics The New 52 relaunch which was controversial but successful. I asked Finch what it was Continue reading David Finch Exclusive: His Justice League of America Favorites

Grant Morrison Reveals MULTIVERSITY

Pax Americana image courtesy DC Comics and The Hollywood Reporter

Grant Morrison has finally unveiled his upcoming project Multiversity. Morrison previewed the 8 part story at Morrisoncon this weekend in Las Vegas. DC Comics confirmed this story will define the Multiverse for The New 52 and introduce new concepts, heroes and villains according to The Source.

“There’s something always appealing about a Russian Superman and a vampire Batman,” Morrison tells Heat Vision. “It’s a different way  of looking at the archetypes that we’re familiar with. And I wanted to a really massive story that would be my Lord of the Rings and it would be the best thing I’ve ever done. Whether it is, I don’t know. But I’ve certainly spent a long time on it.”

“If you’re having a war across multiple parallel realities, one way they can contact each other is to publish comic books that others can read and know what’s going on,” says Morrison. “So in each parallel reality you’ll see one of them is reading the comic that you just read the month before and finding out what happened to the good guys, giving them a chance to defeat the bad guys in the next one. They are kind of passing on, in a chain, their own adventures.”

Pax Americana was revealed at MorrisonCon. This issue will feature the Blue Beetle, The Question and Captain Atom. These heroes are part of the group of characters known as the Charlton heroes – the company bought by DC. The Pax story involves the assassination of a president and how the Charlton characters failed. Frank Quitely will be the artist on this issue.

“We’re taking the characters and applying it back to Watchmen and seeing what we could get. Nobody has really used those Alan Moore tricks in 25 years so it seemed right to take that very tight, controlled, self-reflecting storytelling and seeing if we can do something new with it,” Morrison explains.

Morrison is leaving monthly books – Batman Incorporated and Action Comics but this is Multiversity will not be his final superhero project.

“All I ever said is  I’m not doing the monthly comics once I finish up Batman and Superman. I’ll never leave superhero stuff because I really enjoy doing it.

Op/Ed: Welcome back Ted Kord!!!

Nightwing Past, Present and Future

Nightwing #0 courtesy DC Comics

I think Dick Grayson is one of the greatest heroes in all of comics books. Like Barbara Gordon, Dick has no super powers. He’s a guy who believes in justice. You think you know the origin of the original Robin but this is the one year anniversary of The New 52, so there’s room for expansion on the story. I welcome it.

This week’s Nightwing #0 shares the past and peeks into the future of the young man who was once Robin. It should have been called Robin #0. Tom DeFalco joins creative team Kyle Higgins and artist Eddy Barrows. From the tragedy at Haly’s Circus that left Dick an orphan to his first time in the Robin costume we learn the tragic and triumphant story of a young man so similar yet so different from Bruce Wayne.

Dick’s first encounter as Robin marks the New 52 debut of Lady Shiva – her return is long overdue!. Tom DeFalco is writing the next two issues of Nightwing featuring a reunion between the assassin and Grayson.

Nightwing: The Lost Year courtesy DC Comics

My one critique is this should have been called Robin #0 but I would enjoy reading Nightwing #0.2 revealing Dick’s transformation from Batman’s sidekick into becoming his own man and his own identity.

One artistic homage I really enjoyed what seeing the Graysons in costume remembling the Nightwing blue look – still my favorite look!

New Team on Superman Zero

Superman #0 courtesy DC Comics

DC Comics The New 52 marks the one year anniversary of the relaunch with a new creative team on the publisher’s most iconic hero. DC Comics revealed that Scott Lobdell and Kenneth Rocafort (Red Hood & The Outlaws) take over Superman with issue zero this September. Lobdell shared this excitement for his upcoming run.

“Like every other writer in the world who has ever heard of SUPERMAN, I’ve spent a good part of my life wishing for the opportunity to write the ongoing adventures of the Man of Steel!

“Grant Morrison has left me a lot of new bright and shiny new toys on the table through ACTION COMICS — and you better believe I’m going to take every one of the around the block for a ride! Thank you, Grant, for the this brave new world, and thank you DC for trusting me with the super hero who started it all.

“I wrote a proposal for the series and I remember more than once thinking ‘No way they’ll let me do this — not in a million years!’ But then I’d look up at the Post-It® over my computer that says ‘Scott, Go Bold Or Go Home!’ and I just kept writing! For weeks after I turned it in I kept waiting for the phone call that said ‘Uh, yeah. Interesting. But never in a million years, Lobdell!’ Instead I got a text that said simply said  ‘Congratulations.’

“So strap yourselves in, people, because we’re going up up upper and awayer than we’ve ever gone before!

“Yes, I am acutely aware that I have some very big shoes to fill. From Jerry and Joe right on through George and Dan and Kieth and all the other writers and artists over the run of the series.  Not too nerve-wracking, right?!

“And, of course, I probably would not have made the leap to the world’s most recognizable hero if I didn’t do it with Kenneth Rocafort at my side.  Anyone who has been following his artwork on RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS knows he has an imagination unlike many others!  He can handle the heavy lifting that comes with world building on one page, and pull a tear out of you through an intense emotional moment on the next.”

After seeing how Rocafort portrayed Starfire I look forward to seeing how he draws Lois Lane!

Batman Incorporated #0 courtesy DC Comics

DC Comics will mark the one year anniversary of launching The New 52 by going back to zero. This September all the DC titles will #0 and be stand-alone stories.

“Some issues will tell the origins of a character or a team, or in some case where an origin has already been told, they will fill in the blanks in terms of questions readers may have about the New 52 DC Universe,” said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. “Each of these issues promises to reveal something surprising.”

DC will launch 4 new books during the anniversary month:

(From the presser:)

TALON – Co-Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV. Artist: Guillem March.

Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin of the Court is trying to live a normal life … but that’s impossible when he’s being hunted by his former masters!

SWORD OF SORCERY – Writer: Christy Marx. Artist: Aaron Lopresti.
Featuring the return of Amethyst, Amy Winston leads a strange life on the road with her mother and resents it. She’s about to learn it’s all been necessary when she discovers she’s the lost princess of Gemworld—and she’s being hunted by her murderous aunt. With a back-up story written by Tony Bedard with art by Jesus Saiz, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the monstrous warrior Beowulf is charged with finding and defeating the evil Grendel.

THE PHANTOM STRANGER – Writer: Dan DiDio. Artist: Brent Anderson.
Spinning out of his recent appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and DC’s Free Comic Book Day story, learn more about the true origin of The Phantom Stranger and his connection to the mysterious Pandora.

TEAM SEVEN – Writer: Justin Jordan. Artist: Jesus Merino.
Set in the early days of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, threads of the entire DC Universe collide. As Superman emerges, so does the world’s counter measures against him and his kind. Team 7 is comprised of Dinah Lance, Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Cole Cash and Slade Wilson — and their story will change everything you know about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

The new books follow with #1 issues in October and the other books will resume their numbering.
