Richard Schiff is joining the cast of Superman reboot The Man of Steel currently shooting in Vancouver, Canada. Variety reports Schiff will portray “Dr. Hamilton” which is likely based on the comic book character Dr. Emil Hamilton.

In the DC Universe Dr. Hamilton is a former S.T.A.R. lab scientist driven insane by Lex Luthor. Hamilton later recovered and became Superman’s scientific advisor but later became a villain again.

Schiff won an Emmy as Toby Ziegler on The West Wing.

This is a wild, unconfirmed rumor but will People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2011 be playing DC Comic’s most charismatic criminal genius?

Cosmic Book News claims they have a tip that Bradley Cooper will be playing Lex Luthor in the new Superman reboot. Michael Shannon as General Zod is still the main villain in The Man of Steel. Luthor would be only a cameo.

What do you think of Cooper as Luthor? Stay tuned.

That’s Some $2.16 Million Dollar Action!

Action Comics #1

A near mint issue featuring the first appearance of Superman soared to a new auction record tonight. The copy of Action Comics #1 sold tonight for $2.16 million.       This issue was stolen from Nicolas Cage’s home. He was insured. This 1938 issue is graded at 9.0. The previous auction record was $1.5 million for an 8.5 grade issue of the same issue. About 100 copies of this famous issue are out there.

Thanks to Robot 6 for tonight’s news update. I don’t have any issues that old but oh how I wish I’d taken better care of my 80’s X-Men, Hulk and Avengers issues!

Fans Come to the Rescue of Superman Collector

This is the kind of story that makes you just feel good. Fans around the world rally to help a devoted Superman fan rebuild his collection and make sure justice is served.

Huffington Post reports that thieves took advantage of Mike Meyer and stole 1,800 of his comics. Meyer has been collecting since he was 10 years old. He tells Fox2now how it felt to have his treasured collectibles stolen.

The story of this injustice spread around the world and soon donations were flying in from fans as far away as China to Meyer’s home in Illinois. Meyer was surprised by a call of support from Brandon Routh, who played Superman in the Superman Returns. ABC News/AP also reports that Meyer was treated to a tour of Jerry Siegel’s childhood home. Siegel is the co-creator of the Man of Steel.

This story demonstrates what a collection means to those of us who collect. It’s more than issues in plastic sleeves. Our collections are something that grows with us as we grow up. Mike Meyer’s happy ending shows that heroes don’t always have to sport spandex and capes.
