Big changes are coming from DC Comics this summer. The publisher announced 24 new books in June including new solo series starring Black Canary and Starfire plus more Harley Quinn each month.

The new books follow the successful relaunch of Batgirl and trend of female heroes taking the lead in their own titles.

Mike Madrid traced the history of Batgirl, Black Canary and other fan-favorite icons in The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism and the History of Comic Book Heroines.

I asked the author his take on the women of the “newer” New 52. Continue reading THE SUPERGIRLS Author On The New BLACK CANARY

The A-Force will assemble this summer as Secret Wars leads to an all-female Avengers squad. Marvel announced G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett will co-write the upcoming team book starring She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, Nico Minoru and more fan-favorites.

An all-female Avengers book is significant so I reached out to the author who literally wrote the books on female superheroes.

In The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism and the History of Comic Book Heroines, Mike Madrid traced the legacy of female heroes and influence on pop culture. Madrid then took us back to rediscover Divas, Dames and Daredevils: Lost Heroines of The Golden Age and Vixens, Vamps and Vipers: Lost Villainesses of The Golden Age.

What does this comic book historian think of Marvel’s new Avengers team? Continue reading THE SUPERGIRLS Author on A-FORCE

The announcement of a new Thor #1 starring a Goddess of Thunder caused a storm across the realms. A mystery woman will take the place of Thor Odinson. Like a lightning strike, the news inspired thunderous cries of support and criticism.

Whether you love or loathe the concept of this new Thor, what is the significance of a woman as the God of Thunder?

I turned to the man who literally wrote the books on female superheroes. Continue reading THE SUPERGIRLS Author On The New THOR

DIVAS DAMES & DAREDEVILS CoverIn an age when fans take to social media to save comic books starring female heroes it’s amazing to think back to a time when strong women packed the pages of comics.

Divas, Dames and Daredevils: Lost Heroines of Golden Age Comics takes you back to an age of extraordinary women fighting evil as reporters, fighter pilots, detectives, masked vigilantes and super-powered goddesses.

Mike Madrid (The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy and the History of Comic Book Heroines) devotes a chapter to the different styles of female heroes that populated comics anthologies of the 1940’s. You may know Wonder Woman or Sheena, Queen of the Jungle but Madrid introduces you to other fantastic women of the era. Continue reading DIVA, DAMES & DAREDEVILS Preview

Phantom Lady Busts Out!

Get ready for Phantom Lady #1. The female member of the Freedom Fighters stars in her own miniseries by writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Amanda Conner with her partner in crime Doll Man.

I just discovered the amazing history of Phantom Lady in The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy and the History of Comic Book Heroines. Mike Madrid kicks off his book with the origin of Sandra Knight in the 1947. Knight was a bored rich girl who donned a yellow bikini and cape to seek thrills and fight crime as Phantom Lady.

I met Madrid recently at GeekGirlCon 2012 in Seattle where he delivered an insightful and hilarious look at female superheroes through the decades starting with Phantom Lady.

Knight’s costume has definitely changed over the years and this is Jennifer Knight. This Phantom Lady’s parents were killed when she was a child by Gotham City gangsters, The Benders. Jennifer will infiltrate the mob family as part of her plan for revenge.

Phantom Lady #1 is out this week from DC Comics.
