Sean Connery Cameo Talk in SKYFALL?

James Bond journeys to Scotland in Skyfall. Bond’s father was Scottish. Sean Connery is Scottish. You see where I’m going?

A Sean Connery appearance in the latest 007 film for Bond’s 50th Annivesary?

Director Sam Mendes tells Huffington Post that there was a possibility of a Connery cameo.

“There was a definite discussion about that — way, way early on. But I think that’s problematic. Because, to me, it becomes too … it would take you out of the movie. Connery is Bond and he’s not going to come back as another character. It’s like, he’s been there. So, it was a very brief flirtation with that thought, but it was never going to happen, because I thought it would distract.”

Did Mendes and the producers make the right call?

A Bond fan confession: My first 007 film was Moonraker. I grew up on Roger Moore and one night while waiting for the ABC Sunday Night Movie with my dad – up comes the pre-credit sequence then title sequence for From Russia, With Love. I turned to my dad and asked “Who is Sean Connery?”

From Russia, With Love is now my all-time favorite 007 film. I love all the Bonds for what they are and what meant then and now.

I hope the franchise continues for decades and a kid may one day turn and ask “Who is Daniel Craig?”

Skyfall opens November 9th in the U.S.

Ryan Reynolds As New Highlander

There can be only one…and he is Ryan Reynolds? The man who played Deadpool (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Hal Jordan in Green Lantern has been cast as the lead in a new Highlander according to The Tracking Board. The site reports Reynolds will play Connor MacLeod and the remake is being directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

If you’re not familar…Christopher Lambert played the immortal warrior in century spanning feuds with others of his kind. Once you killed a fellow immortal you absorbed their energy and strength. The film showed Connor’s life in the 1500’s in the Scottish Highlands and in the present day. Sean Connery played his fellow immortal and mentor Ramirez. The film spawned sequels and television series and is known for music by Queen. Here’s a link to the trailer for the 1986 film. Here’s the trailer for Highlander Endgame which brought together Connor from the original film and Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) from the television series.

What I always found ironic with the original film is that a Frenchman was cast as a Scotsman and the most famous Scotsman was cast as a Spaniard but I still loved it.

Daniel Craig’s James Bond New School of Cool

The meaning of Hollywood cool is being rewritten by Daniel Craig. Take the DNA of Steve McQueen and Sean Connery and you have Craig. The man is evolving cool with every film.

When I saw these pictures on MI6 I immediately of Craig as Mr. X in Layer Cake – smooth, in control, wears a suit like a weapon no matter how fast he’s running through London.

Director Sam Mendes, Craig and the Skyfall crew is filming in Tower Hall gunning for a cab and bearing his iconic gun. Team Skyfall is also filming at the famous Vauxhall Bridge that goes over the Thames and the cinematic home of MI6.

James Bond Actor Breakdown

James Bond is a family tradition and a family business. My dad took me to my first 007 movies as a kid and we could always reflect on our favorite moments as we both got older.

007 Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are continuing the legacy of their dad, Albert R. Broccoli. After the first official Skyfall set photo was revealed Wilson talked about the men who’ve played Bond over the years and how team Skyfall is bringing back elements that made the 007 adventures of the 60’s and 70’s such hits.

“Sean was a tough guy; he set the tone,” Wilson said. “[Roger] played it more comic. Roger was lighthearted. Timothy brought it down to earth and Pierce brought a touch of charm and touchiness.”

“[Daniel] is a great actor who takes it back to the Sean days,” Wilson said.

Did you notice no mention of George Lazenby who played Bond once in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service? I think that performance and film never gets the praise it deserves.

In an earlier story, Daniel Craig referenced From Russia, With Love and Live and Let Die as influential Bond films he enjoyed.

Thanks to MI6 for the story.
