Batman Talon Triple Shot: 3 Lethal Looks

The Night of the Owls event affects the Batman family of books as the secret society unleashes an army of assassins knows as Talons on Gotham City’s heroes. Talons from different eras will attack different members of the Bat-family. The Source revealed three new designs a century apart.

Scott Snyder’s American Vampire collaborator Rafael Albuquerque created the 1980’s version of the Court’s Talon appearing in the back-up stories in Batman.

“I’ve tried to bring a clerical look,” he said. “Ceremonial, but also, something an assassin could use. Needless to say that I’ve followed what Greg awesomely did on the original Talon design, but also tried to do something different, with more leather than metal, and a cloak, to resemble almost a religious look to him.”

Jason Todd, Arsenal and Starfire will face a slick almost reptilian version of the eternal assassin.

“Our Talon is from the 1980s, so I think it reflects a very modern look,” said Bobbie Chase, Red Hood and the Outlaws series editor. “Our character is also an acrobat, and Kenneth [Rocafort] did a great, dynamic job with the design.”

The Talons were back in the 1880’s along with Jonah Hex. Here’s the design for the henchman appearing in All-Star Western.

“I first went to Racinet’s history of western costume. Then I looked a little harder at Ospery’s armies of the Napoleonic wars,” teased All Star Western artist Moritat, tongue firmly in cheek. “After several sketches I leaned toward  Prussian cavalry, specifically Borstell’s Pomeranian brigade.”

Do you have a favorite Talon look yet? Night of the Owls begins this May.

Night of the Owls: Batgirl Vs. Talon

Batgirl will face the wrath of the Court of Owls when Night of the Owls crosses into all the Batman family of books.

Greg Capullo reveals his latest Talon design on The Source. This is an enforcer from the 1940’s that will clash with Batgirl and as you can see by the design – this is the first female Talon.

“Scott’s (Snyder) direction was she was an African-American female,” said Capullo. “I freely admit that the design of the breastplate was inspired by the fact that she had breasts.”

Night of the Owls begins this May.

Batman’s Death Sentence

  “Hurt him…more.”

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s macabre masterpiece that is Batman Vs The Court of Owls continues with a bloody night at the theater . After last month’s mind warping journey through the Owls’ labyrinth Batman takes a vicious beating while the Court cheers on their sinister champion, the Talon.

Capullo makes you feel the pain in Bruce’s battered body and you get uncomfortably close enough to his bloodshot eyes. We see just how massive, depraved and creepy the Council is and their surprise they’re about to unleash on Gotham City and Batman is chilling.

Mr. Freeze’s Chilling Tie to Court of Owls

Batman Annual #1 courtesy DC Comics

As DC Comics New 52 marches on every new villain’s debut is hotly anticipated. Mister Freeze debuts in Batman Annual #1. The icy enemy is connected to the hottest Bat-storyline in years. What is the chilling foe’s role in the Court of Owls scheme to seize Gotham City.

“Mr. Freeze is a character full of pathos and tragedy and at the end of the day, he’s one of Batman’s deadliest,” Batman writer Scott Snyder told The Source. “So as you can imagine, I’m very excited to be able to do a story that establishes him in the new DCU, with rising stars James Tynion IV and Jay Fabok. This will be tale that really digs into Freeze’s psyche, explaining his connection to the Court of Owls in the present, and exploring dark secrets about his past. Really thrilled to see what you guys think!”

Jay Fabok provided this chilling preview art revealing Freeze on Batman Annual #1 coming in May.

Batman #5 Experiment in Insanity

Batman #5 courtesy DC Comics

Calling Batman #5 the latest chapter is not giving Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo the credit they deserve. Batman #5 is a work of macabre art and a bold experiment in storytelling that will take its place in graphic novel history.

Batman is caught in the ultimate trap set by the Court of Owls. As our hero tries to stay focused in their elaborate labyrinth the comic book you’re reading actually twists and turns taking you inside the mindwarping maze right up the slaughter.

You may actually may feel discomfort and tension just like Batman as your watch him lose his sanity and struggle to maneuver inside the trap. Snyder and Capullo have created an experience.

This is the work of two dark creative forces literally breaking a hero’s psyche and taking the reader into his journey into madness. The Court of Owls may still remain a mystery but clearly Snyder and Capullo are master manipulators like the villains with a grip on Gotham City and making Batman lose his grip on reality.

Batman Battles The Talon

The Court of Owls mystery helps make Scott Snyder’s Batman my favorite DC New 52 title. DC Comics recruited fan favorite Gary Frank for this variant cover to Batman #6 showing Batman battling the Talon, The Court of Owls enforcer.

Batman #5 is out tomorrow. DC’s The Source has this first look at Gary Frank’s variant cover to #6.

Batman Back-up Stories Reveal Gotham’s Secret History

Batman courtesy DC The Source

One of my favorite new DC New 52 series is Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. Batman is plagued by the Court of Owls and the Talon, their enforcer. Snyder’s revealed the entwined dark history of his secret society, Bruce Wayne’s family and Gotham City.

Batman #8 will feature the first of a series of back-up stories exploring the secret group’s past and agenda. The back-up tales will unite Snyder with his American Vampire partner Rafael Albuquerque.

“The first backup, in issue eight will give a sense of the terrifying scope of the Court of Owls’ attack on Gotham. This really will be the first shot in a war for the soul of Gotham City,” said Snyder. “And then, starting in issue nine, we’ll begin a three part story called ‘The Fall of the House of Wayne’ that will investigate the secret history of the Court of Owls and its relationship to the Wayne family – particularly to Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce’s parents. The story will be told from the point of view of Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred’s father, and offer some big surprises and shocks about the forces that shaped the bat-mythology as we know it. Can’t wait for you all to see these stories!”

Snyder will co-write these stories with James Tynion IV.

“I’m also excited to be co-writing with my friend, James Tynion IV, a young writer I’m extremely excited about. Especially in the spirit of the New 52, it’s a real thrill to get to give someone new and talented a chance to get his foot in the door, and James is a writer to watch and expect great things from!”

The back-up stories will build up to May’s huge cross-over with all the Batman titles,  Night of the Owls, which will reveal the impact of the society’s master plan.

You can find more preview images and Snyder’s interview on DC’s The Source.
