Jeph Loeb launched a brand new NOVA series with a new hero soon be under the helmet. Sam Alexander is a small town teen who just learned his father’s delusions of space adventures were no illusion. This week in Nova #2 Sam gets recruited by a talking racoon and a green warrior woman!

Loeb likens Sam to another famous teen hero with great power and responsibility:

“If we’re lucky, we’re taking on the type of stuff Peter Parker did in the earliest Spider-Man stories trying to be a super hero and a normal kid.”

“That story of Sam Alexander being 16 years old and already having given up is something I think people can relate to. But in the Marvel Universe, when we’re at our worst, that’s when the hero comes forward.”

Outer space adventurers like Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy are reborn franchises and the future of Marvel.

“The relationship between Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy is very important to where we’re going. Brian Bendis and I have talked about it since the beginning. It’s on the first page of the first issue. It’s really cool to see Ed drawing the Guardians.”

“It will be a little bit of a surprise Continue reading NOVA Meets Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel is making Guardians of the Galaxy their next big screen adventure. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning wrote the new version of the team spinning out of their Annihilation storyline.

Unlike the previous incarnation set in the 31st century, DnA’s team was set in the present day with an odd assortment of cosmic characters that just clicked including Rocket Raccoon and a revamped Star-Lord. It was this team that Marvel Films will feature in the upcoming movie.

“Dan and I are really excited to see the Guardians of the Galaxy make it to the big screen, especially as it would appear to be the iteration of the team established during our run on the title. We will be eager to see the film along with all the fans of cosmic stories,” Lanning told Comics Newsarama.

“One thing we’d like to go on the record with is that we owe a huge debt of thanks to the great stories of our predecessors, in particular, Jim Starlin and Keith Giffen, these guys are the giants on whom we stood.

“Beyond that, we’re sorry but we really don’t know anything, so we can’t make any further comment,” he concluded.

Guardians of the Galaxy blasts into theaters August 1, 2014. No word on a new comic book series but with Rocket Raccoon appearing in promo art for Marvel NOW! it’s a good bet the team will be back in a new book soon.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” Is Marvel’s Next Big Movie?

Marvel Studios is definitely launching a new film franchise in May 2014. Will is be Guardians of the Galaxy? That’s been the speculation for months and two sources: The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision and Latino Review report Marvel will make an official announcement during Comicon International. Reports also say Nicole Perlman has already turned in a script. An outer space based franchise would fit with the big cosmic-level reveal at the end of The Avengers.

Most fans have been cheering for the Guardians team by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning that debuted in the aftermath of their Annihilation epic in 2008. The team includes Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. Similar to the Avengers, these individual warriors were united against a common threat after several galactic conflicts.

Now I know I’m showing my age here but I’m fond of the old school Guardians: Vance Astro, Yondu, Martinex, Charlie-27, Nikki and Starhawk. These heroes were from the future fighting against the alien empire of the Badoon. The 31st century team went into the past to team up with the Avengers most notably in the classic Korvac saga.

Today’s fans really love ’em some Rocket Raccoon and he would work as an action figure and stuffed animal! Maybe Mark Walhberg’s teddy bear in Ted will be an indication of how Rocket Raccoon could work on screen. Stay tuned true believers.

As I shared this news with my co-worker (and non-comic reader) Matt Scheck he said “you know, there hasn’t been a sci-fi space epic in while.” Matt, my friend I think Marvel hears you.
