Wolverine secret weapon (and often comic relief for X-Men readers) gets his own limited series by two comic book giants starting this week.
All-New Doop #1 reunites co-creators Peter Milligan and Michael Allred who gave us Doop back in a groundbreaking new take on X-Force which became X-Statix.
The series gives us an insider look of what else happened during X-Men: Battle of the Atom including Doop’s role in the X-Men’s monumental fight and Kitty Pryde’s personal life. Continue reading ALL-NEW DOOP
The X-Men’s secret weapon (and often comic relief for fans) gets the spotlight in All-New Doop #1. Co-creators Peter Milligan (writer) and Mike Allred (artist) reunite for this insider look of what else happened during X-Men: Battle of the Atom. Allred creates the cover while David La Fuente provides interior art.
Here’s a first look inside Shadowman #13 as the series takes new direction from comics icon Peter Milligan (Hellblazer, Justice League Dark, X-Statix) and visionary artist Roberto De La Torre (Daredevil, Age of Apocalypse.)
Here’s how Valiant describes the new arc:
“When a troubled young man with a history of violence and a penchant for blackouts meets an overwhelming source of power with a mystical scythe, the results are doomed to be destructive. A voodoo loa has possessed Jack Boniface – or so he believes. Continue reading SHADOWMAN #13 Preview
Shadowman gets a new creative team. Peter Milligan (Hellblazer, X-Statix) and artist Roberto De La Torre (Daredevil, Age of Apocalypse) are taking on Valiant’s dark hero with Shadowman #13.
As revealed today in USA Today, Milligan and De La Torre kick off their run all-new story arc “exposing the malignant roots of Shadowman’s superhuman abilities…roots that began in Jack Boniface’s own tortured past…and now extend through the bloodied back-alleys of 21st century New Orleans. Northstar’s upcoming wedding in Astonishing X-Men next month and the reintroduction of a gay Alan Scott Green Lantern inspired my story X Marks Diversity – which looked back at how the X-Men have always been groundbreaking when it comes to characters of different races, cultures, religions and sexual orientation.
I made a glaring omission. As I was reading today’s Axel-In-Charge column on Comic Book Resources CBR’s Kiel Phegley reminded us that current Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso was editor of the Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather. This Marvel MAX series relaunched the Wild West hero as open and flamboyantly gay drew criticism from anti and pro gay groups more than a decade ago. This led Alonso to remind us of two other gay heroes.
“There are plenty of gay characters in Marvel Comics that fly under the radar. Take Phat and Vivisector, for instance: teammates on the [Peter] Milligan/[Mike] Allred X-Force/X-Statix series that were also lovers. I don’t remember them provoking any controversy and I don’t think Rawhide Kid paved the road for them or any other gay characters; the opportunity was always there. Whenever you create a new character, the details of their interior or private life – stuff like their sexuality – will at some time become relevant.”
Northstar’s proposal is Marvel history now. Alonso revealed how recent events affected the storyline.
“Our best stories reflect stuff that happens in the world outside your window. When the Twin Towers fell, we did the Spidey black cover issue [“Amazing Spider-Man #36”]. when New York State legalized gay marriage, we wondered how Northstar – an openly gay super hero who’s in a long-term monogamous relationship – would respond to that development.
The world outside New Yorkers’ windows is one where gay marriage is recognized. But remember: For Northstar and Kyle, getting married is just the beginning of the story – the easy part. Marriage isn’t about the week’s vacation in Tahiti – it’s about the weekend trip to the K-Mart. A year from now, who knows – we could be looking at the historic divorce issue!” [Laughter]
For more of today’s column – a Friday must for me and I recommend for Marvel fans- here’s the link.
I complete forget this mutant couple and this X-Force reboot from two gifted creators! The title was so different at the time – I always thought of it as an X-Men book by Vertigo.
Writer changes for two of edgier DC’s New 52 titles. Peter Milligan is taking over Stormwatch from Paul Cornell with issue 9. Jeff Lemire is taking the reigns of Justice League Dark with issue 9 – after the Justice League Dark, I Vampire crossover. Milligan is staying on Red Lanterns and Hellblazer.
“Stormwatch has the craziness, the paranoia and the occasional bursts of odd humor that really grab me. This is my kind of book. In other words, when I re-read Paul Cornell’s excellent first series with a view to taking over the writing duties I was really excited. And I’m excited too by what I have planned, from Stormwatch facing a ferocious character from the Red Lantern Corps, to hidden secrets being revealed about the origin of Stormwatch, and some shocking revelations about the mysterious Shadow Lords. It’s going to be a very intense ride,” Milligan told The Source.
“It’s a bit of a wrench leaving Justice League Dark, of course, and not working with the increasingly outstanding Mikel Janin. But the fact that Jeff Lemire is taking over makes me very sanguine. I think Jeff is great. And I think he’ll be great for this book. It’ll be intriguing to see how he handles the great conman mage, John Constantine, whose twisted life I’m continuing to chronicle over in Vertigo’s Hellblazer.”
Lemire is leaving Frankenstein Agent of SHADE. Matt Kindt is taking over the series.
This Geek’s Take: I wonder if Stormwatch will evolve into The Authority like it did under the Wildstorm banner? I highly recommend The Authority trades by Warren Ellis and Mark Miller. I loved Jenny Sparks – can we reincarnate her into the New 52?
