New Gambit Solo Series

Marvel announced a new Gambit series by James Asmus (Captain America & Bucky, Generation Hope)and Clay Mann (X-Men Legacy) debuting this August.

“This story will break Gambit out into the larger Marvel Universe. We are trying to make it as accessible to new fans as well as everyone who loved Gambit in the past,” said Asmus.

Before he was a hero, Remy LeBeau was a master thief. Remy’s criminal past came back to haunt him – especially his connection to Mister Sinister and the Mutant Massacre.

“He’s one of the greatest thieves in the Marvel Universe,” Asmus continued and confirmed Rogue will play a part in the series.

Here’s the C2E2 Next Big Thing panel play by-play on Marvel.com.

This Geek’s Opinion: I’m a big fan of James Asmus and Clay Mann’s art. I love Gambit but as part of a team. Remy is currently part of X-Men Legacy, where’s a slow burning attraction building with Frenzy, and Astonishing X-Men. This new series is in the aftermath of AvX so who knows what twists and turns are coming for the mutants. I will definitely give it try.

New Captain Marvel Series Update

Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel courtesy Marvel

A little more news at the C2E2 Marvel Next Big Thing panel about the upcoming Captain Marvel series. Kelly Sue DeConnick will helm the new series starring Carol Danvers with art by Dexter Soy and cover by Ed McGuiness.

In issue #2 DeConnick will introduce the Banshee Squadron- which sure sound like villains. DeConnick said her pitch for the new series was “Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeagher” and focus on her as a pilot so may these are high-flying female threats or allies to the former Ms. Marvel. In the panel the writer likened them to a new school Howling Commandos.

“I love Mystique so much,” was DeConnick’s response when a fan asked if the mutant shape-shifter would appear.

Here’s the link to my interview with Kelly Sue DeConnick at Emerald City Comicon about Captain Marvel and the new costume.

It was revealed DeConnick will team with Terry Dodson for an upcoming arc of Avenging Spider-Man. Issue #9 will guest star Captain Marvel.

Who Fights Black Widow in The Avengers Movie?

Marvel's The Avengers courtesy Marvel

Scarlett Johansson is smoking at Black Widow in Marvel’s The Avengers. The actress apparently took a beating while making the flick. On the red carpet before the world premiere Johansson revealed talked about her stunt work and almost revealed a spoiler to MTV News.

“The stunt sequence that I’ve been the most proud of is probably my fight with…” Johansson stops. “Actually, I don’t know if I can say!”

She looks at someone off camera and asks, “Can I say? I don’t know if I can.”

When MTV News asked her if it’s Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Johansson replied, “No,” and her eyes became playfully shifty as she continued, “All I can say is that I had to fight someone else in this film, and they beat the crap out of me in stunt rehearsals. I have to say I could not believe it.”

This Geek’s Opinion: Wouldn’t it be a cool sequence if Loki -being the trickster that he is – turns Black Widow and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) or Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) against each other?

Imagine being the new kid on the block in Marvel’s The Avengers?

Colbie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) plays one of my favorite characters, SHIELD Agent Maria Hill.

Smulders traded her tight spy uniform for a gown to work the red carpet for the world premiere in Los Angeles.

Here’s the Marvel.com link to watch the entire red carpet including interviews with the stars and more photos.

The Avengers Secret Weapons

A God. A Super Soldier. A Genius in a High-Tech Suit of Armor. But Earth’s Mightiest Heroes need more than just the big guns to get it done. When the Avengers need stealth and razor-sharp focus – they can count on Black Widow and Hawkeye.

Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson play the Avengers born without super powers but are still power players on a mission. The two stars are featured in a new interview on Marvel.com

“We are humans with high skill sets,” Renner said. “[Hawkeye and Black Widow] fight well together…and they complement each other.”

“Both of us fight hand-to-hand…but we’re fighting in a different way than everybody else. We do a lot of fighting on the ground,” added Johansson.

In the comics, Hawkeye and Black Widow are currently starring in Rick Remender’s Secret Avengers. Hawkeye leads the covert team. Both characters will appear in Avengers Vs. X-Men and AvX: Vs.

Captain America Sequel Sets 2014 Date

Chris Evans in Marvel's the Avengers courtesy Marvel

Disney and Marvel announce the Captain America sequel will hit April 4, 2014.

Cap’s second solo adventure will “pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.”

Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers.

A Geek’s Hope: I really hope Marvel/Disney will use Ed Brubaker’s The Winter Soldier epic as the inspiration for the modern-day set sequel. This would mean Sebastian Stan returning as a very different Bucky Barnes. Plus the introduction of the Red Skull’s daughter Sin and her lover/enforcer Crossbones.

Marvel recently revealed they’ve narrowed down their list of directors.
