Black Widow is in the cross-hairs.

The publisher promised more will be revealed at the Amazing Spider-Man panel at Comic Con International. Other teasers include Captain America, Thor and Wolverine. All are Avengers so far.

The biggest theory going around is that this could be the Ultron War – Brian Michael Bendis’s swan song on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?

Spider-Man Gets a New Sidekick

Fans will see a new cinematic Spidey (Andrew Garfield) on the big screen and a big change in the comic book. A web of intrigue started spinning when Marvel Comics asked “Who Is Alpha?” in an  mysterious tease online. Today Marvel.com revealed the answer: Spidey is getting a sidekick as part of his 50th Anniversary. This August in Amazing Spider-Man #692 Writer Dan Slott and Artist Humberto Ramos give Peter Parker a new partner. Teenager Andy McGuire will become Alpha when he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time…in a lab with Peter Parker.

Spidey is an Avenger, works with the Future Foundation and has co-starred in his own team-up book but he’s never had a teen sidekick. Marvel Entertainment Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso reveals to Fox why this is the time for a partner?

“Part of it is that Spider-Man is grown up,” said Axel Alonso, editor-in-chief of Marvel Entertainment. “He’s older, more seasoned, but young at heart. He’s still a young man, but he’s been around. It’s interesting because it flips the paradigm. Teen hero Spider-Man is now responsible for this teen hero sidekick. He’s responsible because one of his inventions caused this kid to get his powers. He’s directly responsible for the responsibility this kid now has with his new powers. He feels he has a responsibility to make sure this kid walks the right path, which won’t prove easy.”

Amazing Spider-Man Dan Slott says don’t expect this team-up to be like another famous comic book dynamic duo.

“If you put Spider-Man and Batman in the same situation, you’re going to have way more fun with Spider-Man,” said Dan Slott. “With Batman, he never really screws up the way Spider-Man does; he always seems to make the right decision. But with Spider-Man, he always screws up. He’s us as a superhero. Batman is a paragon of what we’d like to be, but in reality, we’re more like Spider-Man. He makes all the mistakes we make.”

What do you think of Spidey getting a partner? It’s easy to compare Alpha to Batman’s Robin. And the obvious question: will Alpha will a sidekick like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd or Tim Drake?

This Is WAR: Captain America’s Shield Teaser

This Is War courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel.com revealed a third teaser image for an October event: This is War. The new image is of Captain America’s blood splattered shield. The previous images were of Thor’s broken hammer and Wolverine’s hand (claw popped) in flames. Marvel promises to reveal more at The Amazing Spider-Man panel on July 15 at Comic-Con International.

A new event? A new series? Is this the aftermath of AvX? Because the reveal is coming during a Spider-Man panel I wonder if this Fall’s event centers on Spidey since it’s his 50th anniversary?

Let the speculation continue!

Avengers Vs. X-Men: Adam Kubert’s Phoenix Five

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 courtesy Marvel.com

If you were the side of the X-Men before AvX…are you still? I have to ask myself given Scott’s actions. Cyclops has now declared “No More Avengers.” The X-Men will become hero hunters and Avengers will be imprisoned in upcoming chapters.

Marvel.com revealed Adam Kubert’s variant cover for Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 showcasing the fiery and regal Phoenix Five (Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik, Namor.) Scott is holding Captain America’s shield.

Here’s the description for the issue:

“The chase comes to a head in Wakanda, as the sovereign nation becomes the target of an out-of-control Namor! Will the onslaught of the powered-up Sub-Mariner overwhelm the Avengers? The answer – and a shocking truth about the X-Men – is revealed”

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 by Brian Michael Bendis and Adam Kubert arrives July 18th.

Some of my AvX theories are blown now. I had suspected the overzealous Cyclops was under the influence of the Void but wouldn’t the Phoenix have burned that out of him? It’s ironic the future the X-Men wanted to avoid (Days of Future Past) is now the present but they are the hunters instead of Sentinels.

Astonishing X-Men’s Northstar: After the Gay Wedding

Astonishing X-Men #51 preview courtesy Marvel on Comics Newsarama

When a hero gets married it can lead to a dead end…creatively. Marvel even wiped out Peter Parker’s marraige to Mary Jane. Northstar gets hitched in Astonishing X-Men #51. After the headlines and hype over a gay wedding in a comic book what happens next for Jean-Paul and Kyle?

Writer Marjorie Liu tells Comics Newsarama how Northstar’s married life will fit into the series and the difference of telling a story with a married versus single hero.

“This is just the beginning. By getting married a whole new direction has opened up, story-wise, for them both. Marriage isn’t the end-point of a relationship. It’s just a stepping stone, one aspect of a long-term evolution between two people who have, for whatever reason, decided to take a leap of faith and say, “Well, hey, this is a person who I want to *try* with for the rest of my life.” Which is not a guarantee of perfection — far from it.

Certainly, the stresses haven’t changed. Kyle is still a human man who has to watch his husband leave at a moment’s notice to save the world, and who can’t be at his side, or help protect him. In some ways he’s a liability — in danger, because of his husband’s “profession” as super hero. For Northstar, he has to deal with the fact that he’s part of a team, a family, that will always understand what he’s going through in ways that Kyle never will — and that can be very lonely when he goes home.”

Northstar was Marvel’s first openly gay hero. Marjorie Liu was asked about the importance of Jean-Paul to Marvel and to fans.

“Northstar is certainly important as a representative of the gay community within the Marvel Universe. But his value as a character is also grounded on something more than just his sexual orientation (as would be the case in real life). He’s vain, arrogant, but also a man who risks his life without a thought in order to help others. You can count on his loyalty — and his quick temper — and he’s been portrayed, again and again, as someone who lives life to the absolute fullest, without regrets or second-guesses. He loves, and acts on that love; he gets angry, and then acts on that anger. Northstar is no fake.”

As a long-time fan of X-Men and Alpha Flight – I’m thrilled to see Aurora and rest of Jean-Paul’s Canadian team in the big wedding issue.
