Avengers Movie: Loki & The Captain

Thor and Loki’s sibling rivalry explodes to threaten the world in Marvel’s The Avengers this May. Tom Hiddleston gave insight into Loki’s interactions with Captain America and the Hulk in a new interview with Total Film.

“I had huge fun with Chris Evans, as Captain America, because super-soldier though he may be, he’s still a man, up against a God who in his own mind is infinitely superior,” Hiddleston said. “Then, in the ring with The Hulk, we’ve got this silver tongued, lightening quick mind up against the embodiment of rage…Loki has this mercurial, transformative ability, not just physically but intellectually, so not all the fights are purely physical. Mind games? Maybe..”

Thanks to Spinoff Online for the story and I salute their description of the film as “Earth’s Mightiest Movie. The best kept secret of the big screen movie is still a secret – Loki’s army he unleashes on Earth.

New Mutants Journey Into Mystery

Exiled courtesy Marvel.com

The New Mutants will take a Journey Into Mystery in Exiled, a crossover between the two books. A one-shot will kick off the 5-part story in May.

Kieron Gillen (Uncanny X-Men, Journey Into Mystery) and Andy Lanning (New Mutants) joined Marvel’s Next Big Thing event to reveal more of the story.

“This developed quite quickly and quite easily given the long history of the New Mutants in Asgard. We wanted to bring that to Earth rather than take them back to Asgard. It’s a little twist on how past stories have played out. There are some really cool reveals and surprises along the way that will hopefully play against type and expectation.” Andy Lanning

Carmine Di Giandomenico will provide interior art.  Stephanie Hans will create covers. Gillen teases the art fans will see in this mythic collaboration.

“Carmine’s image of Hell, for example, is unlike any other Hell I’ve ever seen in a Marvel book. I stared at one his panels for 10 minutes. He’s a very powerful artist.” Kieron Gillen

“The Asgardians are fish out of water in this story, and that’s part of the fun.” Andy Lanning

“The New Mutants are now older than the last time they were in Asgard, but Loki is younger. They’ve almost taken on the parental role. It’s fun.” Kieron Gillen

This is exciting news given the compelling history between the mutants and Norse Gods – especially Danielle Moonstar fans. This will continue subplots started in Siege when Dani made a deal with Hela to gain her Valkyrie powers back.

I highly recommend The Asgardian Wars trade paperback featuring X-Men, New Mutants and Alpha Flights’s adventures in Asgard caused by the adult Loki’s manipulations.

Iron Man’s Two New Suits of Armor?

The comic book version of Iron Man is unveiling a new suit of armor. Is the big screen version of the Armored Avenger suiting up in new tech to take on Loki’s army?

Marvel Comics Avengers Versus X-Men event will feature new armor designed for a specific foe according to Invincible Iron Man and AVX writer Matt Fraction. This AVX teaser image showing Iron Man versus Magneto is likely to be the foe. Iron Man will have to innovate to face the Master of Magnetism. Perhaps Tony is using some mystical tech he picked up from Asgard in the Fear Itself epic.

Cosmic Book News is sharing an image of an Iron Man in “Stark Tek Assault Armor” and reporting that this the design for a toy tie-in.  Comic book fans may think this is based on the Hulk Buster Tony created to tackle the Green Goliath. There’s also a Captain America version.  I agree with CBN that if this armor is in the movie it could be used to fight Skrulls, Frost Giants or any other army Loki is using in his war that assembles Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

How many fans would love the chance to talk with Joss Whedon? I would probably be speechless or so hard trying to be cool – I’d blow all my questions.

Marvel is giving you the rare opportunity to chat (via Twitter) with the fan favorite creator and two stars of The Avengers.

Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Clark Gregg (SHIELD Agent Coulson) will join the writer/director Tuesday, January 31st 2pm EST for a global chat.

Fans can use the @Avengers handle and #Avengers hashtag in a live 30 minute session. The faithful will be rewarded with a :10 second preview of the :30 second commercial appearing in the Super Bowl.

Loki and Red Skull Versus The Avengers?

Will The Avengers movie feature an old school Marvel Super Villain Team-Up?

We know that Thor’s half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is the main foe of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. And he has a secret army. Is the God of Mischief teaming up with the Red Skull?

MovieWeb caught on to what might be a big giveaway via a toy description. NECA’s HeroClix releases their Avengers line in 2012. The product description for retailers below does make you suspect the Captain America arch-enemy is helping Loki take on the super team:

“Charging straight out of theaters and onto your tabletop, Marvel’s the Avengers Movie HeroClix set features heroes like Captain America and Thor as they battle the villainy of the Red Skull and Loki! Each Counter-Top display includes standard one-figure boosters as well as new three-figure “Team Packs”! Team Packs are designed with strong thematic undertones – play a Hydra force or defend freedom with a S.H.I.E.L.D. team pack!”

If you remember in the climatic fight of Captain America: The First Avenger the Red Skull was transported into another realm via the Tesseract. Could the enemy have landed in Asgard or the realm of the Frost Giants?

Hugo Weaving was perfect as the Red Skull. Seeing Weaving and Huddleston together would be chilling and thrilling. I just hope the Red Skull (along with Sin, Crossbones and the Winter Soldier) are part of a modern-day Captain America 2.

Loki’s Army in The Avengers? Agent Coulson Speaks

In Marvel Comics history Loki’s scheming causes the Avengers to assemble. Loki is the main villain behind the big screen assembling of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but who has his back against combined forces of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and SHIELD?

Clark Gregg plays SHIELD Agent Coulson in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers. Comic Book Movie has an exclusive with the actor.

When asked if fans will recognize Loki’s army, Gregg responded, “Well I guess that will depend on the fan and what they’ve read and what they’ve seen,” said Gregg. Jokingly, he went on to say, “I mean if they’re fans of Land of the Lost then they won’t be surprised to see Loki show up with a bunch of Sleestaks. I think everyone is going to be surprised to see Loki get out of a Romulan ship is all I’m going to say.”

The answer could get minds warping with all kinds of speculation. It certainly could add fuel to the fire that the Skrulls are allied with Loki. The Skrull are reptilian aliens with shapeshifting powers.

In Marvel history, when Kree-Skrull War threatened Earth the Avengers held the line. In the epic Secret Invasion – the Skrulls infiltrated every super hero team with shapeshifters in their plot to conquer our planet.

Being the God of Mischief, Loki is likely to be the instigator of a conflict between Earth and the Skrulls – if that turns out to be the case.

Special note: The Tesseract was a device from Asgardian myth sought after by the Red Skull in the Captain America movie. This device is a variation (different name though) of the Cosmic Cube. In Marvel history, it was theorized that the Skrulls created one of the Cosmic Cubes.

The Avengers Villain’s Favorite Filming Moment

Avengers Character Banners courtesy Marvel.com

Tom Hiddleston will once again don the horned helmet of Loki in The Avengers next summer. The actor playing Thor’s brother revealed his favorite moment of filming to UK’s Elle magazine via the Winnepeg Free Press.

“My favorite moment on set was filming at a NASA location the size of a cathedral. I flew around like a trapeze artist in a rocket-testing facility in the company of Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Renner. That was a pretty good day at work,” he said.

Hiddleston revealed the mood on the set of a movie with such a big cast of stars.

“All of the actors in ‘The Avengers’ are so nice. Marvel has these code names for projects and the code name for ‘The Avengers’ was Group Hug. It felt very much like a group hug on set.”

Thanks to SuperHeroHype for the updates. The Avengers assembles in theaters May 4, 2012. Hiddleston will be seen in War Horse next.
