Aaron Taylor-Johnson is in talks to play Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The mutant criminal (and son of Magneto) turned Avenging hero is one of the most divisive characters in Marvel Comics.

While promoting Kick-Ass 2 the star was asked about the appeal of Quicksilver.

Taylor-Johnson points out his that he was still in talks but according to the story with Total Film, he has clearly been doing his research: Continue reading KICK-ASS Star on Quicksilver in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Teen costumed hero Kick-Ass is back in Kick-Ass 2 this summer. In this sequel we go back into the world created by comic book legends Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. The young vigilante (Aaron Johnson) joins a group of normal citizens (including Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes) inspired to fight crime while the Red Mist (who gets a new code-name) plots his revenge!

My Most Anticipated 2013 Movies

A Super Bowl packed with movie trailers inspired this list of my most anticipated genre movies in 2013:

#10 Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller take us back to the notorious haven of crime, corruption and women with dangerous curves! Eva Green as Ava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin join the hard-core citzens of Basin City! October 29.

#9 Oblivion Tom Cruise is a repairman of the future who finds a clan of humans (led by Morgan Freeman) on what’s supposed to be a scorched Earth! This new film from director Joseph Kosinski looks action packed and thought-provoking. April 19.

#8 Kick-Ass 2 Sadistic, satirical and twisted! More “real” superheroics from the mind of Mark Millar. Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes is among the new citizen heroes that follows Kick-Ass’s crusade but the Red Mist is plotting vengeance against the vigilantes! June 28.

#7 World War Z  I absolutely love the book by Max Brooks. I already know the film is very different from the novel. It really should have been a cable series like the Band of Brothers of zombies. I choose to believe in the Pitt…Brad Pitt! June 21.

#6 Pacific Rim Guillerno del Toro. Giant Robots. Giant Monsters. They had me with del Toro and giant anything! July 12.

Mark Millar Will Consult on X-Men and Fantastic Four

The Cast of X-Men: First Class courtesy Marvel.com

Hoping you will see an Avengers team up with the X-Men or Fantastic Four on the big screen – think again. Looks like Twentieth Century Fox is looking to hold on to the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise and they’ve hired a comic book powerhouse to guide those franchises forward.

Writer Mark Millar has been hired as a creative consultant on the studio’s upcoming projects: Director James Mangold is now shooting The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman in a story based on the classic Chris Claremont/Frank Miller story of Logan in Japan. Matthew Vaughn is directing the X:Men First Class sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. Josh Trank (Chronicle) is attached to direct a reboot of Fantastic Four.

Mark Millar co-created Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. Millar’s The Ultimates were a modern take on the Avengers and he created that line’s version of Nick Fury based on Samuel L. Jackson. You could say Marvel’s The Avengers were more like Millar’s Ultimates than old school Avengers. Millar also created Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four.

In main Marvel Universe Millar wrote the epic Civil War and Old Man Logan, Enemy of the State arcs of Wolverine.

Millar went on to create Millarworld titles Kick-Ass and Wanted – both went to become box office hits.

“As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with both comic books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig as it’s a unique combination of both,” said Millar. “I spent ten years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me. I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema’s biggest talents. James Mangold is incredible, Matthew Vaughn’s one of my closest pals and Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with ‘Chronicle.’ The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone call I’ve ever had.”

Op/Ed: Before directing X-Men: First Class, Matthew Vaughn directed the big screen version of Kick-Ass so if Millar has that kind of creative relationship with Vaughn then I’m excited to see how they will develop the X-franchise. I think Millar will guide the Fantastic Four reboot into darker territory instead of the most comedic tone of the previous films.

If you want to experience some of the work of the man who will help guide the future of Marvel’s biggest heroes at Fox? Here are some recommendations: Ultimates: Super Human, Ultimate Comics Avengers OmnibusUltimate X-Men: The Tomorrow People, Civil War, Old Man Logan  and Wolverine Enemy of the State. I highly recommend Millar and Frank Quitely’s arc on Wildstorm’s The Authority.

X-Men: First Class Screenwriter Talks Sequel

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy from X-Men: First Class courtesy Marvel.com

Jane Goldman is screenwriter and queen of comic book geek friendly films. She’s featured in Entertainment Weekly because her new film The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe opens February 3rd. I was fascinated to learn the greek cred connections Goldman shares.

With director Matthew Vaughn, she gave us Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class. The Goldman-Vaughn partnership started with an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. He’s a family friend who recommended Goldman to Vaughn. Her husband is British television presenter Jonathan Ross, who is collaborating with Bryan Hitch on an upcoming comic book series, America’s Got Powers. Goldman wrote the short film James Bond Supports International Women’s Day.

With Kick-Ass based on Mark Millar’s comic and X-Men: First Class -Goldman has become the female member of a male dominated clique of superhero-film makers.

“The only moment I became aware of being the only woman in a meeting is when actresses are being discussed,” she told EW, “If someone’s critical of how a woman looks, they turn to me and apologize.”

Goldman told EW she and Matthew Vaughn enjoyed a “huge amount of freedom” on the reboot. And her response to a Vaughn directed sequel, “I’m there.”

I’ve posted my hope that a X-Men: First Class sequel will introduce Magneto’s children: Polaris, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver.

I loved Kick-Ass, Stardust and X-Men: First Class – all very different movies from the comic book genre that worked – a sure sign that the Goldman/Vaughn partnership is magic.
