Billy the Vampire Slayer?

Buffy, The Vampire Slayer Season Nine #14 will introduce a new twist on the vampire killer. Jane Espenson and Drew Greenberg will introduce Billy: a gay male without “slayer” powers.

The series went off the air in 2003 but adventures in “Buffyverse”continue in Dark Horse Comics. Joss Whedon (The Avengers) executive produces the continuing comic book series. In Buffy mythology only young girls are “chosen” to become slayers so why Billy?

Espenson says she developed the character while working on her web series Husbands.

“I already knew [the character] Cheeks, and he has a line in Season 1 of Husbands, that Brad [Bell] wrote, that really struck me about how Cheeks has an ‘exotic femininity’ that’s equated with weakness,” she told OUT.

“I thought: ‘Gee, all the work we’ve done with Buffy is about being female, and how that doesn’t mean that you are lesser’. It suddenly struck me: If being feminine doesn’t mean that you’re lesser, then liking guys also doesn’t mean you’re lesser.”

“For very good reason, we’ve focused on the female empowerment part of Buffy, but I wondered, ‘Did we leave something out? What if someone in high school is looking up to Buffy as a role model, and we’re saying: You can’t be a slayer’.”

Billy is a new character who trains himself to fight like a slayer.

“He may not have the actual powers of the slayers, but he’s determined to be his own kind of hero, one who’s sort of modeled after those who do have the power, and he sets out to make due with what he has,” said Greenberg.

“Batman doesn’t have super powers. He wasn’t gifted with an exotic foreign birth. So we take the Batman route; Billy is earning the Slayer mantle,” Espenson adds.

Billy’s introduction is the latest chapter in GLBT characters (Willow and Tara)and storylines of the “Buffyverse.”

“We’re hardly pandering when we make a comic book,” Espenson said. “There’s always growing pains when making progress, but I think cynicism in the face of inclusion may not be a profitable route in making progress.”

Here in Seattle, GeekGirlCon welcomed Espenson and the cast of Husbands earlier this year. Dark Horse Comics will bring Husbands to comic books later this year.

Thanks to OUT.

ABC Greenlights SHIELD TV Pilot by Joss Whedon

Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill in Marvel’s The Avengers courtesy Marvel.com

ABC has ordered a pilot for a live-action television series from Marvel’s The Avengers writer-producer Joss Whedon according to Deadline. Whedon will co-write and possibly direct!

S.H.I.E.L.D. is the peacekeeping organization run by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as seen in Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. The pilot will be written by Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) were agents of SHIELD.

Can we get Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) out of her contract and in this show?! I love Maria Hill!

Here are links to some of my favorite SHIELD stories you might enjoy: Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD by Jim Steranko, Nick Fury vs. SHIELD by Bob Harras, Secret War by Brian Michael Bendis and The Ultimates: Ultimate Collection by Mark Millar.  Here’s a link to Marvel’s The Avengers on Blu Ray.

Vin Diesel as Vision in Avengers Sequel?

Avengers Origins: Vision courtesy Marvel.

This is just a rumor…

Vin Diesel as the Vision in Avengers 2? Images of the the android have been posted on the actor’s Facebook page according to ComicBook.com which has fans and bloggers speculating so I thought I’d sound off.

I can picture Diesel as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy…maybe even as Thanos.

After seeing Prometheus my vision for the Vision is Michael Fassbender.

I’m just glad it’s in Joss Whedon’s hands.

Joss Whedon, Avengers Sequel and Television Series

Marvel’s The Avengers director Joss Whedon will be back to write and direct the sequel and develop a new Marvel Universe themed, live-action television series for ABC according to Variety.

No word on which characters will appear in the television series. I’m betting on the agents of SHIELD. Disney/ABC is already developing a Hulk series with Giullermo Del Toro.

Spider-Woman In the Marvel NOW!

Avengers Women of Marvel variant featuring Spider-Woman courtesy Marvel.com

One of my favorite elements of the Brian Michael Bendis Avengers era is how he brought the original Spider-Woman back in the spotlight and made her an Avenger. Sure the Spider-Woman who joined New Avengers #1 was actually a Skrull but the real Jessica Drew finally came back.

Jonathan Hickman is taking over Avengers and New Avengers in 2013 as part of the Marvel NOW! relaunch. Hickman revealed his Avengers will start with 18 cast members. Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso now confirms Spider-Woman will be part of the relaunched team.

In today’s Axel-in-Charge column on Comic Book Resources a fan asked if more female characters like Spider-Woman will have a place the Marvel NOW! world.

“Spider-Woman will remain part of the Avengers, and may turn up in Avengers Assemble,” Alonso responded.

“As for Black Widow, while she won’t have a new Marvel NOW! title, she’s currently appearing Secret Avengers, Avengers Assemble and Winter Soldier,” he added.

This is just speculation on my part but could Spider-Woman appearing in Avengers Assemble mean Marvel Films could be considering have Jessica join an Avengers sequel or star in her own movie? Given Joss Whedon’s stunning track record of writing and directing female heroes can you imagine how Whedon would translate the tragic and triumphant life of Jessica Drew!?

And I still say if Mila Kunis wants to play a superhero – write a Spider-Woman script for her!

Avengers Firefly Mashup

I bow to the Joss Whedon superfan who lovingly created this mashup of the director’s most beloved projects. The fan recreated the opening credits of Firefly with characters/stars of Marvel’s The Avengers.

By Editor with thanks to Huffington Post and this creative, passionate fan. This just fuels my wish for Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau as Hank and Janet Pym.

Joss Whedon “Torn” About Directing Avengers 2

Marvel's The Avengers courtesy Marvel

He did it! Joss Whedon took 4 major movie franchises and married them into an amazing film that has won critical praise and soared past the 1 billion dollar mark. Will Joss Whedon re-assemble a sequel to The Avengers?

“You know, I’m very torn,” Whedon told The LA Times Hero Complex before the film’s U.S. opening. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

For the entire interview (I highly recommend this site too) here’s the Hero Complex link.

One of the many reason I love Whedon and loved The Avengers is his gift for writing and directing strong female characters – that’s why I named Black Widow my MVP.

Why Joss Why? Avengers Death Explained – SPOILER WARNING

Marvel's The Avengers courtesy Marvel

If you haven’t seen Marvel’s The Avengers yet you may not want to keep reading this post.

WARNING

SPOILER AHEAD

SERIOUSLY

IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE AVENGERS MOVIE DON’T KEEP READING

OK

HERE IT COMES

Joss Whedon always kills the ones we love and we love him for it. Death has meaning, impact and drama in Buffy, Serenity, Angel, and The Avengers. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes needed someone to avenge. Agent Phil Coulson had to die. But Whedon tells io9 it wasn’t completely on him this time.

In our first meeting Kevin Feige said, this is what we’re gonna do and I said, “Oh but you have to go out there and tell everybody that it was your idea because this is going to get me so much s—. Because they are all going to be like, “Oh he did it again!” It was stipulated from the beginning, and I completely agree that it was the right thing to do, and so did Clark. Who said in the early days, when I was busy apologizing for it, “In a movie like this, with what’s going on if there isn’t some toll, it’s just irresponsible story telling.”

This Geek’s Take: It never occured to me that Agent Coulson would die because I was so caught up in the movie. Phil, you will be missed. I’m glad Coulson will live on in the Marvel comic universe.
