We made the call more than year ago…Johnny Depp is perfect for Doctor Strange.

Of course it’s obvious but now there are numerous reports Marvel wants the star to play the Master of the Mystic Arts. Latino Review reported Depp and Marvel have actually been in talks.

The chameleon-like yet box-office champ has a track record of turning weird and supernatural into magic for the masses.

What about Strange’s supporting cast: Continue reading CASTING DOCTOR STRANGE Update

Doctor Strange appears to be a huge element of Marvel’s Cinematic Phase Three if you believe all the rumblings on the web! Pulling off the Master of the Mystic Arts could be tricky but who knew Iron Man would have been a blockbuster smash leading to Avengers Assembling on the big screen!

Like Robert Downey, Jr. playing Tony Stark – casting is key! You need an actor with charm, charisma who can make dark magic believable.

Doctor Stephen Strange was a brilliant, rich, arrogant surgeon who injures his hands in a freak accident. When the Doctor can no longer practice medicine he goes Continue reading Casting DOCTOR STRANGE

Johnny Depp Should Be Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange: The Oath cover courtesy Marvel.com

Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp as lovelorn, time lost vampire Barnabas Collins didn’t dethrone The Avengers from the top of the box-office. Depp’s latest collaboration with director Tim Burton is the actor’s latest journey into the dark goth side. I think Depp would be the prescription for a big screen version Doctor Strange. Dark Shadows makes Depp top of mind but his performances in The Ninth Gate and From Hell are what really seal the casting deal for me.

Stephen Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The Doctor was a brilliant surgeon with a troubled family past. An accident damaged the nerves in his hands ending his career. Searching the world for an alternative cure Strange encountered a mysterious being in Tibet called the Ancient One. This meeting led to his study of sorcery and eventually becoming Master of the Mystic Arts and sorcerer Supreme of Earth.

I can picture an adventure with Strange and Baron Mordo, both students of the Ancient One, until Mordo betrays them to become a disciple of Dormannu. Clea was the Doctor’s student and eventual love interest. Doctor Strange could easily fit into Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange is currently serving with the Avengers during Avengers vs X-Men and The Defenders by Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson.

Johnny Depp Dark Shadows Poster

The trailer for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows did a comedic 180. His big screen version of the gothic soap opera from the 1970’s plays upon an old school gentleman vampire awakened in the 70’s.

Johnny Depp plays vampire Barnabas Collins. Bond girl Eva Green plays the witch Angelique who cursed Collins. Empire posted some colorful characters posters celebrating the 70’s groovy gothic vibe.

Johnny Depp Goes Vamp in “Dark Shadows” Trailer

The Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter connection continues with Dark Shadows. The upcoming movie is inspired by the 1970’s daytime gothic soap opera. Depp plays vampire Barnabas Collins. Michelle Pfeiffer (Catwoman in Batman Returns) is another Burton alumni in the cast. Bond girl Eva Green (Casino Royale) plays the witch villainess. I have never experienced a trailer take a 180 turn like this. Enjoy! I sure did!

First Look Johnny Depp as Tonto

The Lone Ranger and Tonto

The first picture of Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto were revealed by producer Jerry Bruckerheimer via his Twitter account. Gore Verbinski is directing The Lone Ranger out May, 2013.

I’m loving these looks for the big screen. Tonto has look that reminds me of James O’Barr’s The Crow.

Dynamite published a great comic book starrring the Lone Ranger written by Brett Matthews with art by John Cassaday.

Edgar Wright & Johnny Depp on The Night Stalker

Darren McGavin as Kolchak: The Night Stalker

I stayed up way past my bedtime and was scared out of my little kid mind by The Night Stalker. Darren McGavin played tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak in the 1970’s ABC series. Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) will direct Johnny Depp in a big screen version for Disney according to Deadline.

The reporter covered the crime beat for a tabloid and encountered werewolves, vampires, aliens and zombies. An episode with a monster that sucked the salt of its victims was the one that really freaked me out.

Kolchak appeared in two made for tv movies and then the series only last one year but what an impact. The series is often credited as the inspiration for The X-Files. In fact McGavin played the founder of the X-Files in a few episodes. ABC attempted a reboot of the series in 2006.

This Geek’s Opinion: Johnny Depp is a perfect actor to inherit the role made famous by the great Darren McGavin. Wright’s track record of horror and humor makes him perfect for the occult cases of Kolchak! After looking at the old show opening I almost hope they set the new movie in the 70’s.
