What If the Marvel Universe Rebooted?

The creative minds at Marvel Comics may be orchestrating the greatest “What If?” story of all time? Is Marvel time twisting their comic book universe into a reboot of the entire line? When Marvel Now was announced fans speculated a major reboot was coming. Brian Michael Bendis teased that the finale of Age of Ultron is “unguessable.”

Could decades of history and continuity be burned away for a whole new beginning?

Let’s take a look at what’s happening and coming:

Kang The time traveling manipulator is the mastermind of Rick Remender’s latest Uncanny Avengers arc. Kang has seized the Apocalypse Twins and manipulate an 11th century battle between Apocalypse and Thor. Odin warned that the arrogant young Thunder God’s victory will have a price.

All-New X-Men Beast went back in time to bring the original five X-Men into the present. The best laid plan backfired and was powerfully written by Brian Michael Bendis. Young Jean Grey’s telepathic powers triggered earlier than it had in real Marvel history and she doesn’t have Professor Xavier to train her. Jean has assumed control of the teen X-Men and declared they will stay in the present – their future.

THANOS RISING Review

I feel a little uneasy right now after having just read Thanos Rising #1. Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi actually made me feel sympathy and empathy for the most cold-blooded, ruthless killer in the Marvel Universe.

The Demi-God who worships Death comes to the planet of his birth and flashes back to his birth. Is a villain born evil, does he grew up that way or is manipulated into his deadly legacy?

As I read this first issue I was reminded of the boys in Stephen King’s Stand By Me, Norman Bates in Psycho and  Continue reading THANOS RISING Review

Captain America and Iron Man rallied to create a bigger roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and declared Earth as Avengers World in Jonathan Hickman’s first arc. The new and improved team isn’t big enough to handle what’s coming in the six-part event Infinity.

The Avengers will need to become a universal team to face Thanos. Marvel is revealing new details about the event that will bring Black Bolt and the Inhumans into the cosmic clash with the Mad God of Titan (and the villain behind Loki’s invasion in The Avengers movie.)

“Events stories simply don’t come bigger Continue reading INFINITY & Avengers

Jonathan Hickman assembled a bigger roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Now the universe’s most powerful villain is gunning for them!

Infinity will be a six-part event by Hickman with artists Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver according to USA Today.

“The universe’s greatest serial killer is cut loose to do bad things to our most precious world,” said Hickman.

Hickman has been planning for this cosmic clash in his Avengers and New Avengers series. I was excited to learn Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will get backup from the Inhumans.

“They’re not like a team of superheroes. They’re a demographic — being an Inhuman is like being Cuban, like being Irish,” Avengers Editor Tom Brevoort says. “Within that strata, there are good guys and bad guys and bystanders and guys who just want to do their job and go home and drink an Inhuman Löwenbräu and kick back.”

Nick Spencer on AVENGERS to INFINITY

Marvel has recruited a big gun for a big story starring the biggest team in comics. Nick Spencer (Secret Avengers, Morning Glories) will join Jonathan Hickman on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes starting with Avengers #12 this May. That issue takes the team to the Savage Land. Spencer spoke with Comics Newsarama about his co-writing assignment with the very busy Hickman and what the current stories are driving towards.

“It’s the big lead-up to Infinity. One of the coolest things about the gig is that it wasn’t just, “Come in and kill time for a few issues, and do some filler.” The lion’s share of what I’m working on is the direct lead-in and the prelude to Infinity, and setting the stage for all that, so it’s a big, important story. It wasn’t just an opportunity to be a part of the book, but to be a part of the book at a really crucial juncture.”

The roster of Hickman’s Avengers has expanded to include New Mutants Sunspot and Cannonball along with heavy hitters Continue reading Nick Spencer on AVENGERS to INFINITY

Marvel is going big for this year’s Free Comic Book Day 2013!

Thanos. Hickman. Cheung.

Thanos is the big purple bad at the end of The Avengers movie.

Jonathan Hickman (Avengers, New Avengers) is the mastermind of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Jim Cheung (Avengers vs. X-Men, Young Avengers) is the artist (one of my personal favorites) that can fill panels with big screen action.

Marvel is teasing a cosmic clash with Fantastic Four, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, Avengers, Inhumans, Spider-Man and more against the universe’s ultimate threat!
