We continue our look at the amazing year in comic books. Here are more of our favorite heroes, moments, creators and trends of 2013.
Best Team Leader: Steve Rogers, now and forever but especially as seen in Infinity. The master tactician rallied the universe and coached his team (Thor – Infinity MVP?) to an intergalactic victory against the Builders and then take back the Earth from Thanos. Alex + Ada #2 I picked up the first issue just because I loved Jonathan Luna’s haunting cover and now this second issue is a MUST. A beautiful future love story of a boy and his android girl who may not be what he’s expecting.
Batman #26 The Dark Knight, Jim Gordon working WITH the Riddler? With Gotham City in chaotic darkness Bruce may ally with the madman who tried to kill him in this critical untold chapter of Batman Zero Year.
A brand new heroine from one of the best teams in comics. Captain America, Winter Soldier creative team Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting reunite for a dark new espionage comic book.
Velvet #1 hits comic book shops this week and here’s the description courtesy Image Comics.
Velvet Templeton is supposed to be just a secretary, the personal assistant to the Director of a top secret Intelligence Agency, but when the world’s greatest spy is killed, she quickly finds herself caught in a web of mystery and murder, as her own secret past comes to light.
Kelly Sue DeConnick brought her insight, humor, passion and inspiration to GeekGirlCon ’13 for the first time this past weekend in Seattle.
The third annual celebration of women in geek culture welcomed the writer who charted a new course for fan favorite Avenger Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble.
DeConnick soars into her own new adventure with a creator-owned book with artist Emma Rios. DeConnick revealed at the panel how she and Rios started the idea of working together back in 2009 with a love of Westerns. Both creators have shared their artistic processes via social media so much that there’s already fan art and high expectations for Pretty Deadly #1. Continue reading PRETTY DEADLY #1 Preview at GeekGirlCon
Batman/Superman #2 The first issue of when Bruce met Clark blew me away. Greg Pak and Jae Lee create a thrilling, creepy mystery that brings the two iconic characters together and in this issue launches them out of this world.
Lazarus #2 Greg Rucka and Michael Lark’s stunning new sci-fi epic is a sinister new spin on violent heroines in a dystopian future. I fell obsessively in love with the killer girl named Forever in just one issue! Run out and grab issue one, get this one and enjoy.
The Massive #14 The crew a rescue shop navigate a harsh new world after an environmental apocalypse. In this issue the survivors finally reach what’s left of Manhattan but are they closer to finding their missing friends on the sister ship. Continue reading Top 5 Comic Book Picks for July 24, 2013
If you think kids killing kids in The Hunger Games is twisted – add more violence, foul language, killer bots and take out the love triangle and enjoy the wicked fun that is America’s Got Powers #1.
The biggest game television show on Earth features super powered teens in death matches for fame and fortune. Tommy Watts is part of the comic relief sideshow in the world’s most violent reality series until the competition goes tragically wrong and he’s thrust into a role he’s only dreamed of.
This is from the minds of writer/comedian Jonathan Ross and artist Bryan Hitch and Image Comics. The story takes familiar elements and turns them into something twisted and new while skewering society’s obsession with youth, violence as entertainment, reality television. I’m intrigued by the promise of the conspiracy behind this television show and invested in Tommy, reluctant young everyman hero who may be a terrifying super-man.
