You could call Jean Grey #2 a Phoenix Force Family Reunion this week.

Jean knows the Phoenix Force is coming back. In this new chapter it’s a telepath power up as Jean unites Quentin Quire, Rachel Grey (now called Prestige in X-Men: Gold) and Hope Summers hoping to find answers as she prepares for the inevitable confrontation with the cosmic entity.  It’s the driving force behind Jean’s first solo ongoing by writer Dennis Hopeless and artist Victor Ibanez. Will she be ready as the Phoenix resurgence enters a new phase? What does it mean when Jean Grey meets Jean Grey later this summer? Continue reading X-MEN Ready For PHOENIX Return

WHAT IF AVENGERS VS X-MEN #1 Review

What If? AvX #1 takes no prisoners!

The very concept of Marvel’s What If? books are supposed to be dramatic changes to some of publisher’s most pivotal storylines. Picking up What If? Avengers vs. X-Men #1, I knew I was going to get a variation on the battle between Marvel’s biggest teams but I wasn’t ready for what happens in this issue!

Just in case you didn’t get the original AvX story: The Phoenix Force was coming to Earth to bond with Hope Summers, the mutant messiah. Wolverine and the Avengers feared the worst and wanted to take Hope into custody. Cyclops and the X-Men believed the Phoenix and Hope could save the mutant race from extinction. One group saw death. One group saw rebirth. All suffered when the Phoenix Force split into five different hosts. Continue reading WHAT IF AVENGERS VS X-MEN #1 Review

The biggest Marvel story of 2012 is the inspiration for the return of What If? Avengers vs. X-Men was a huge event for the Marvel Universe!

What if “other” heroes became the Phoenix Five?

This week is the first issue of Jimmy Palmiotti and Jorge Molina’s four-part story starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fighting the Children of the Atom…with all-new twists and turns!

Iron Man tried to kill the Phoenix Force before it could reach Earth and possess Hope but the entity split into five hosts: Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor – with devastating results – including the death of Professor X.

Acclaimed creator Jimmy Palmiotti told Marvel.com why the original epic is a perfect inspiration for What If?:

“The set up and Continue reading WHAT IF AVENGERS VS. X-MEN?

CABLE AND X-FORCE Family Values

A book for Hope Summers fans to watch out for! Cable faces his daughter, the mutant messiah of Avengers vs. X-Men in this week’s Cable and X-Force #8.

Hope Summers has been “exiled” from the flagship X-titles. I wanted to share some of writer Dennis Hopeless’s take on the Summers family dynamic. He says he’s explore Nathan’s relationship with the girl he raised and his father, Cyclops.

“I think in both cases, the relationship is hard because of how similar the fathers are to their children. Hope drives Cable nuts because she’s just like him. She’s headstrong and self-righteous, quick to grab a gun and solve every problem herself. Cable knows she learned it by watching him but wants his daughter to have an easier life than he did. Also, he trained her for life in a post-apocalyptic Continue reading CABLE AND X-FORCE Family Values

Cable and X-Men are mutants on the run. This powerhouse team has been branded as terrorists. Colossus is one of my favorite X-Men but writer Dennis Hopeless it taking the character into new territory after Avengers vs. X-Men. No Kitty Pryde. No X-Men. Domino thrives on living a life on the run. Colossus not so much as Hopeless explains:

“Colossus is definitely having the worst time of it. He’s dealing with a lot of guilt—old guilt and new guilt—and wants to atone. There’s a simple solution to all of this, but it’s tough to save the world from behind bars. Pete is torn between his guilt and his loyalty to X-Force and their mission”

Pete won’t be on the run much longer. As you can see from Cable and X-Force #6 Colossus goes to prison.

“He wants to make amends, do his time and move on from all the guilt. He likes prison in a weird way. It’s as though a weight has been lifted from his chest and he can breathe again. The only thing particularly difficult about jail is that Domino, Cable and X-Force won’t leave him alone in there.”

Hope Summers is another mutant who’s been “exiled” from the flagship X-titles. The mutant messiah is back with her “dad” and Hopeless will continue to explore Cable’s relationship with the girl he raised and his father, Cyclops.

“I think in both cases, the relationship is hard because of how similar the fathers are to their children. Hope drives Cable nuts because Continue reading CABLE AND X-FORCE: Colossus, Hope and Cyclops!
