GeekGirlCon welcomes Ms. Marvel writer G. Willow Wilson and expands with new events for its fifth year.

The Seattle event celebrating the role of women in geek culture will have its inaugural fashion show, on Saturday October 10th at 8pm.

Last year’s event was a sold out smash even without major comic book creators of celebrities. This year acclaimed Seattle based writer G. EVANGELINE LILLY New Hair Inspires WASP COSPLAY

The geek world starting buzzing (pardon the obvious pun) after Evangeline Lilly (Lost, The Hobbit) showed off her new hair style on Instagram.

Lilly is playing Hope Van Dyne in Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man movie which started shooting in San Francisco this week.

In the film Hope is the daughter of original Ant-Man inventor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas.) Paul Rudd is playing Scott Lang, the second Ant-Man. Continue reading EVANGELINE LILLY New Hair Inspires WASP COSPLAY

The special Captain Marvel Carol Corps issue is out today. To celebrate the arrival of Captain Marvel #17 I wanted to share the final part of my one on one with writer Kelly Sue DeConnick at GeekGirlCon.

The Carol Corps would love to see Carol Danvers make the leap from comic books to television or a movie. Could we see Carol on an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or an Avengers sequel or possibly her own series or solo movie?

I asked DeConnick what’s the most important for filmmakers to get right about Carol in transitioning the fan-favorite Avenger from comic book to other mediums.

Kelly Sue DeConnick made her first appearance at the third annual GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle. The celebration of women in geek culture was an opportunity for the Carol Corps to show their support for the writer of Captain Marvel and the author’s continuing mission to inspire women who want careers in comics.

I’ve seen DeConnick reach out to young women after Emerald City and Rose City Comic Con panels to encourage them. The Captain Marvel writer recently made headlines at the Women of Marvel panel at New York Comic Con for saying she was “willing to be disliked…willing to be called names, willing to make people uncomfortable so my daughter doesn’t have to.”

DeConnick’s success and passionate support of women in the creative field made her the perfect guest for GeekGirlCon. Continue reading Kelly Sue DeConnick at GeekGirlCon

Janet Van Dyne is famous for her fashion sense and ever-changing uniforms. The mighty and mighty chic Avenger is currently serving on the Uncanny Avengers Unity Squad after coming back from the microverse in the previous Avengers volume.

I had a double take this weekend at GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle – the third annual celebration of women in geek culture.

You have to admire the dedication of a cosplayer who works not one but two looks for the hero they love. I salute this geek girl I met at GeekGirlCon. On Saturday she sported the retro Wasp look complete with headpiece and visor seen here with a woman with great taste in an Avenging Archer! Continue reading WASP Double Cosplay at GeekGirlCon

The Carol Corps was in force at GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle as writer Kelly Sue DeConnick made her first appearance at the third annual celebration of women in geek culture.

Geeks of all genders cheered as the Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble writer took the stage. It was the first con where Captain Marvel cosplayers outnumbered the every-popular Black Widows, Harleys and Ivy’s. That fan devotion is part of the Captain’s success and big plans in 2014.

As part of the All-New Marvel Now initiative Captain Marvel will get a new number one. I asked DeConnick about the reasons for starting at one and how it inspires her to write for the fan-favorite Avenger. Continue reading Kelly Sue DeConnick on New CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 at GGC13

Kelly Sue DeConnick brought her insight, humor, passion and inspiration to GeekGirlCon ’13 for the first time this past weekend in Seattle.

The third annual celebration of women in geek culture welcomed the writer who charted a new course for fan favorite Avenger Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble.

DeConnick soars into her own new adventure with a creator-owned book with artist Emma Rios. DeConnick revealed at the panel how she and Rios started the idea of working together back in 2009 with a love of Westerns. Both creators have shared their artistic processes via social media so much that there’s already fan art and high expectations for Pretty Deadly #1. Denise Crosby was a special guest at GeekGirlCon 2013 in Seattle this weekend. The actress best known as Lt. Tasha Yar of Star Trek: The Next Generation greeted fans, signed autographs and most importantly shared invaluable insights of her experience as an actress.

Sunday’s panel was hilarious, insightful and inspiring. Crosby explained why she left the series after one season. I often call Tasha the “James Dean” of Star Trek because she was on the show for one season but made such an incredible impact. This being a science fiction series, Crosby was able to reprise her role in one of the most beloved episodes, Yesterday’s Enterprise. Continue reading Denise Crosby at GeekGirlCon 2013
