Serenity soars again.

 

One of my most anticipated comics coming in 2014 breathes new life into this outer space corners of the Whedonverse.

 

Joss Whedon created the short-lived but loved Firefly television series which was reborn as a feature film. Dark Horse Comics picks up the story of Mal Reynolds and his crew in Serenity: Leaves On the Wind.

 

Writer Zach Whedon and artists Georges Jeanty (Buffy, The Vampire Slayer) continue with Mal, a pregnant Zoe, River Tam and the rest of outlaws’ story after the events of the Serenity movie when they exposed the universe to the corrupt government’s crimes against their own people. Thousands of comic book and sci-fi fans packed the Oregon Convention Center for Rose City Comic Con this weekend. In just one year the Portland con quadrupled its show size with more celebrity guests, more panels, more game tournaments and more everything geek-tastic in a town that’s known for comics.

Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly, Serenity) stars in Joss Whedon’s retelling of Much Ado About Nothing. Fillion joined the director and other “Whedonverse” alum (Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Clark Gregg) for Opening Night of the Seattle International Film Festival.

Fillion explains the appeal of  Whedon’s modern take on William Shakespeare’s classic romantic war of words and wits:

  I bow to the Joss Whedon superfan who lovingly created this mashup of the director’s most beloved projects. The fan recreated the opening credits of Firefly with characters/stars of Marvel’s The Avengers.

“Firefly” Reunion on “Castle” Tonight

 It’s a Firefly reunion tonight! Adam Baldwin will reunite on-screen with this former Serenity Captain, Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) on ABC’s Castle for the first time in 8 years. TV Guide says don’t expect the on-screen relationship to be just like it was on Firefly and the movie Serenity.

 Baldwin plays Detective Ethan Slaughter, a gang unit officer. Is Baldwin playing a good guy, bad guy or just “aims to misbehave” to quote Mal!

  I just love the Browncoats (if you’re not Firefly savvy, these were the good guys in a future war) and now fans gear up in the uniforms and call themselves Browncoats. The fans are a welcome addition to cons everywhere.

  I just saw Adam Baldwin and Summer Glau recently at Emerald City Comicon and fans of the series (has it really been 10 years?) are still devoted to the cast of the Joss Whedon created show.

It’s cool to see the cast members still have a bond too.
