Original Green Lantern Relaunched as Gay Super Hero

  The speculation is over. One of DC’s Golden Age heroes is coming out. DC Comics revealed that original Green Lantern Alan Scott will be gay when he’s reintroduced in DC Comics The New 52. Earth 2 #2 by James Robinson out next week reveals Scott as the only Green Lantern of Earth 2. Today DC Comics revealed the new Alan Scott and a kiss with his boyfriend.

  “I’m very proud to be introducing Alan Scott into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52,” said series writer James Robinson. “He was my favorite Golden Age character and one I’m very familiar with so I’m really excited to be updating him for a contemporary readership. However, I think old-time readers will be pleasantly surprised by how, in some ways, I’m trying to show the ‘classic’ Alan Scott at the same time. He’s still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He’s still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Oh, and on Earth 2 there is only one Green Lantern, so Alan’s title is The Green Lantern. Alan’s sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2.”

  “Before starting work on #1, the first document I had to work from was the character breakdowns for our primary players,” continued EARTH 2 artist Nicola Scott. “With Alan the brief was very clear. He needed to be a big, strapping, handsome man that everyone would instinctively follow and love. No short order but right up my alley. Alan strikes me as an incredibly open, honest and warm man, a natural leader and absolutely the right choice to be Guardian of the Earth. His sexuality is incidental. Every time I draw him I love him even more.”

  Alan Scott was the Green Lantern of the 1940’s and 50’s and a member of the Justice Society. James Robinson chronicled a gay super hero before. Starman in 1990’s was a groundbreaking series for having a homosexual lead character. Judd Winnick wrote Green Lantern in the 1990’s starring Kyle Rayner with a gay intern named Terry Berg, who became a victim of gay bashing in the storyline. 

  The original Scott married a woman (Rose and Thorn were her dual identities) and they had two children who grew up to be Jade and Obsidian (a gay character) of Infinity Inc. Scott and other Golden Age heroes returned to the present to train the next generation of heroes in JSA.

Earth 2 Wonder Woman Revealed

  DC Comics New 52 will launch a Second Wave of new titles including Earth 2 by James Robinson. The Source revealed this world’s Wonder Woman designed by Jim Lee and her background by James Robinson.

“Due the events that open the saga of EARTH 2, Wonder Woman is already the last Amazon of this world and she is determined to avenge her sisters…at whatever cost,” said Earth 2 writer Robinson.

“How did Wonder Woman come to be the last of the Amazons?” asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. “It’s one of the mysteries we’ll be getting into with the series. While there will be recognizable faces and settings on EARTH 2, don’t for a moment think you’re on familiar ground. Do that, and you let your guard down…and then you’ll end up like the rest of the Amazons.”

I love Jim Lee’s art. This design is heavy on the warrior element. I will definitely check out this title.

DC Unveils Earth 2 Robin

  Get ready to ride the Second Wave as DC The New 52 unleashes 6 new titles this May. Earth 2 by James Robinson introduces new heroes from a parallel Earth. The Source revealed the Robin of Earth 2 design and Robinson gave ‘her’ background.

 Helena Wayne has been taught how to be the perfect Robin,” said James Robinson, writer of EARTH 2. “Assured as a detective, fighter, scientist, pilot and all around crime-fighter she’s been groomed by Batman to be the perfect caped manhunter (or should we say manHuntress) when she grows up.”

 “Before coming to the main DCU Earth and taking up the mantle of Huntress, Helena Wayne fought crime alongside her father as the Robin to his Batman on Earth-2!” said WORLDS’ FINEST editor Wil Moss. “But how did she come to be on this Earth? And why did she decide to become Huntress? You’ll get some clues in next week’s HUNTRESS #6, but for the real scoop, pick up WORLDS’ FINEST #1!”

Earth 2 Batman Revealed

  DC Comics The New 52 is doubling down with a Second Wave of new titles crashing this May and the debut of a parallel world. The Source revealed the Batman of Earth 2 designed by Jim Lee and a big teaser from Earth 2 editor Pat McCallum.

“Who will Batman kill to save his own daughter?” asks McCallum. “Right out of the gate that should tell you we’re dealing with a different kind of Dark Knight here. More ruthless, dangerous…the costume is familiar and yeah, there is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left. Earth 2 is about to become a very bad place to be a bad guy.”

 DC’s Big Three but from Earth Two! The Source revealed cover to the upcoming DC Comics New 52 Second Wave title Earth 2. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are in heated battle (with Darkseid’s warriors?) in this variant cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado.

Huntress Preview

  Batman’s world is filled with dangerous, resourceful women including Catwoman, Batwoman, Batgirl, Talia Al Ghul but one avenging angel I love is getting front burner status.

  The Huntress is currently starring in her own mini-series seeking justice and stalking a mobster in Italy. Helena is the daughter of a murdered mob boss who vows revenge. 

  DC Comics The Source shares stunning new images from Huntress #5 in which Helena will assault an ancient monastery guarded by the Italian military.” This is the penultimate issue of her adventure but a new Huntress’ story is just beginning.

 The Huntress and Power Girl of Earth 2 will star in a new World’s Finest – part of DC Comics The New 52 Second Wave. On Earth 2 Helena is Batman and Catwoman’s daughter. Paul Levitz, George Perez and Kevin Maguire will chronicle the duo’s mission to return home.

 The Huntress has one of my favorite costumes in comics and with a compelling back story making her a great anti-heroine.
