No Capes, No Problem! 5 Non-Superhero Comics

Think you’re old to read superhero comics? You want something else out of literary escapes besides or instead of costumed heroes? Here are 5 of my favorite non-superhero genre series that gripped me in 2012 and wouldn’t let go.

The Walking Dead This year it was time to stop just surviving and start living. One beloved survivor is on longer living in the larger world. The Walking Dead #100 ended with one of the most gripping, sick and painful moments of the year as “Lucielle” changed the survivors forever. I almost hope the television series doesn’t last long enough for me to have to watch that moment again. 100 issues and this series is just as provacative and powerful as ever.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 The Time Lord (along with Amy and Rory) beamed aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise at a time when Federation worlds are under attack from Cybermen working with the Borg. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Doctor must find a way to work together to save the Federation. The creative team captures the spirit of each franchise and demonstrates how each character would react, relate, bond and clash with each other.

The Massive How do you remain a conversationist when you world you hoped to save has gone to hell? How do you remain a pacifist when you must dodge ruthless pirates to get food and supplies you must have to survive. Welcome to  a new world where cities have sank, economies have tanked and civilization is crumbling. The crew of the Kapital sail the oceans in search of their friends on their sister ship, the Massive, and for necessary supplies in order to stay alive. Brian Wood has created a thrilling morality tale while building a dangerous new world that serves a a cautionary tale for humanity.

Manhattan Projects Jonathan Hickman’s gripping story of twisted history and weird science shocked and challenged me with every new issue. Building the atomic bomb was nothing compared to the staggering creations of this government think tank.

Doctor Who Star’s ARROW Role Revealed

courtesy The CW

John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood) is one of the many scif-fi genre favorites (Tahmoh Penikett, Ben Browder, Kelly Hu, Seth Gabel) to guest star on The CW’s Arrow. Now we know who Barrowman is playing so I better give you this…

SPOILER WARNING!

IF YOU DIDN’T SEE LAST WEEK’S ARROW YOU WANT NOT WANT TO KEEP READING!

OK – HERE IS IS:

Barrowman is playing Malcolm Merlyn – father of Tommy, Oliver Queen’s best friend. Will Malcolm or Tommy evolve into infamous Green Arrow villain Merlyn?

“We start off in the pilot with Tommy being … a little bit suspicious [of Oliver], and we haven’t seen that [since],” Amell tells TV Line, “And one of the things I like about this episode is… if he wereeventually going down a darker path, this is a nice way to sort of push a character in one direction.”

“He’s certainly the most nefarious character we’ve met so far,” Amell says of Malcom. “We don’t know a ton about him, just that whatever that symbol means in [Robert Queen’s] book, and however that list was constructed, he’s not necessarily behind it but he’s the closest to the center we’ve gotten.

“He’s obviously the biggest threat that Oliver has,” Amell continues, “which is ironic, because they’ve never come together. So far.”

Tonight’s Arrow continues the storyline with Helena/Huntress.

Manu Bennett (Spartacus) is joining the show as Deathstroke in an upcoming episode.

ARROW Casts Farscape, Stargate Star

courtesy The CW

Producers of The CW hit ARROW are making it hard for die-hard sci-fi fans not to tune in! Ben Browder (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) will join the series as DC Comics character Ted Gaynor according to IGN.

The Blackhawk Squadron member will be the former commanding office of bodyguard Diggle on the series. Browder recently guest starred on the Doctor Who episode A Town Called Mercy. I LOVED Browder as John Crichton on Farscape. Ted Gaynor hits Starling City in the eleventh episode.

John Barrowman (Torchwood, Doctor Who) will join the series in a yet undisclosed role.

Neil Gaiman Returns to DOCTOR WHO!

Matt Smith as The Doctor courtesy BBC America

Neil Gaiman crafted one of my favorite and heartfelt episodes of Doctor Who ever! The author of The Doctor’s Wife will write a new adventure for the Time Lord featuring the Cybermen!

Warwick Davis, Tamzin Outhwaite and Jason Watkins will join Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman for the episode.

“Cybermen were always the monsters that scared me the most! Not just because they were an awesome military force, but because sometimes they could be sleek and silver and right behind you without you even knowing. ’ He added, ‘And with one of the all-time classic monsters returning, and a script from one of our finest novelists, it’s no surprise we have attracted such stellar names as Tamzin, Jason and Warwick,” Executive Producer Steven Moffatt told the BBC.

Doctor Who returns at Christmas and then for 8 episodes in 2013.
