Benedict Cumberbatch is winning raves for portraying Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. The Sherlock star is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Strange.

While promoting his new film, Cumberbatch was asked if becoming a super hero was a risk and what’s the appeal of the Sorcerer Supreme.

“I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing. Marvel makes it official:

Have they conjured the perfect actor to play the Master of the Mystic Arts?

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) will play the title hero in Doctor Strange.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange?

 

We picked the Sherlock star as our runner-up when speculation began stirring for Marvel’s Master of the Mystic Arts. We even suggested the villain from Star Trek: Into Darkness would make a sinister Mephisto!

 

Then when it looked Johnny Depp was in the running we chose Cumberbatch as one of Strange’s villains.
