Remender’s Uncanny X-Force Finale

  This week’s Uncanny X-Force #35 is Rick Remender’s final issue and the final issue for this team. The storytelling was ambitous, violent, senses-shattering. Uncanny X-Force may have not been the “flagship” but look how it influenced the entire X-Men line and Marvel Universe. Angel and Evan’s stories became part of Wolverine and the X-Men. I think no writer since Claremont has evolved Psylocke they way Remender has. Betsy will be team leader of the Uncanny X-Force relaunch in 2013. Remender is now writing the Marvel Now flagship Uncanny Avengers.

  Earlier Remender told Comic Book Resources he’s leaving the series:

  “There were a lot of different factors involved. It was a very tough decision to make and it came down to a conversation I had about it with Kieron Gillen about how long I would stay past this. He said, “Know when to get off the stage.” That’s something that we maybe overlook.

  I’m now doing “Uncanny Avengers” and “Captain America” and I realized that in order for me to do those and not want to blow my brains out, I might have to walk away from “Venom,” “Secret Avengers” and “Uncanny X-Force.” That was a bummer because I put so much into building them and getting the trains out of the station. I love all the characters, but that’s just the reality. With “X-Force,” I feel like this final story, which I’m very excited and have been building towards for a while now, pretty much wraps up everything we’ve been doing. It says everything I wanted to say about a kill squad while also really digging into the X-Universe that I loved so much as a kid growing up. So it really did come down to the fact that it was time to get off the stage.

  Hopefully, I’ll be able to stick a nice landing with “Final Execution” and people will really enjoy it, so the series will never have that part where it tapered and stopped being as good. That’s the upshot. You do your best work — and we all have — and then you wrap things up and walk away from it.”

  Uncanny X-Force was always violent but not just for shock effect. Each act led to incredible character development and an exploration of consequences and reflections. Fantomex made a deadly decision in The Apocalypse Solution, Betsy was forced to kill the man she once loved in The Dark Angel Saga, Wolverine shared a bloody resolution with his son in The Final Execution.

Every member has been punished for their actions during this run. After so many shocks how will Remender end it?

THUNDERBOLTS Justice Like Lightning!

  General Thunderbolt Ross (Red Hulk) recruits Elektra, Punisher, Venom and Deadpool to take on and take out Marvel’s most dangerous villains.

 Get ready for a brand new Thunderbolts #1 this week by Daniel Way and Steve Dillon.

  Way told Marvel.com his past experience with solo books is what drew him to this team concept.

  “My work on solo characters has probably been my strongest, and it’s definitely what I’m most comfortable writing. That being said, the idea—and the challenge—of writing a team book had been steadily moving to the front of my mind for several years. When I was presented with this team, in particular—a team of “lone wolf” characters—it was like a dream come true.”

  With this kind of roster and concept expect Way to be unleashed on this book.

  “This is the team that takes on the big problems others can’t or won’t. The easiest way to explain this is to look at the real world. Though there are atrocities committed all over the world, why is it the U.S. government intervenes in only some of these cases, rather than all? The reasons, sadly and invariably, are rooted in politics. The Thunderbolts have no politics. Of course, this being a comic book with an unlimited special effects budget, rest assured that any conflict into which this team enters will definitely be on the epic side of the scale. With this cast of characters? There’s no way I’m going to hold back.”

 Way delivers this tease making Thunderbolts #1 a book you can’t refuse.

 “By the time the first story arc concludes, the Thunderbolts will have done something that will have everyone—everyone—in the Marvel universe screaming for their blood. What that is and how it happens starts on the first page of the first issue.”

 How’s that for a tease?

Deadpool & The Dead Presidents Debut

  Get ready for a brand new Deadpool #1 out this week! Comedians/comic writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan (with Tony Moore on art) launch the Merc with a Mouth on an insane mission against zombified dead Presidents as an agent of SHIELD. The writers tell IGN how they met and why Deadpool.

  “We met at a comic shop, actually. Around ten years ago now, around the back issue bin. Obviously we were both lifelong Marvel fans up to that point. Deadpool has always occupied that space of action and comedy that doesn’t exist elsewhere in comics. I think that’s why he resonated with us,” Duggan says.

  “Yeah, he was kind of the obvious choice for us. We both can be serious too, and we’ve talked about writing a more serious book down the line, but it felt like the way to get the foot in the door was to do the thing that we’re both good at. And Deadpool is really the only game in town where you can do both things that we enjoy doing – tell an action story but also have the main character be a smart-ass,” Posehn adds.

 The duo says Rick Remender (Uncanny Avengers, Captain America)introduced them to Editor in Chief Axel Alonso leading to the Deadpool relaunch.

  Now back to that crazy concept of Deadpool versus Undead Presidents…

  “It starts with a man who has decided that America has a lot of problems that can only be fixed by bringing back our former leaders, our great American Presidents. But that’s not how it works out. Once they’re back, they have a completely different idea of what they need to do and what the country needs. It’s a distasteful job having to send our presidents back, but Deadpool is up for the job and is suited for it. They’re not equal in terms of their planning, but in their own way they have returned corrupted. We think it’s going to be a very fun first story that leads to other funny stories,” Duggan tells Marvel.com.

  Seeing Wade Wilson versus a monster version of FDR is really weird. The comedian/writers and Tony Moore unleash their twisted history lesson this Wednesday with Deadpool #1. I wish I could take credit for this line but bravo to Marvel.com for “In Wade We Trust.”

Uncanny X-Force: Deadpool’s Final Execution?

Treachery among killers. Rick Remender is counting down to his final issue and series finale of Uncanny X-Force. The series that opened with the killing of a child who would become Apocalypse has never lots its edge. This time it’s personal.

Evan is one of the most tragic figures in the X-world today. Fantomex and Wolverine thought this clone could have an innocent childhood and not rise to become the evil Apocalypse. The boy has been kidnapped by a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, learned the truth of his origin and is being pushed into his dark destiny.

Daken, Sabretooth, Mystique, Blob, Skinless Man and the Shadow King think they’ve killed X-Force and can harness the unleashed Apocalypse. This chapter is a harrowing story of treachery among killers. As always Mystique has her own agenda and has her own endgame planned out. Sabretooth appears to be learning from Raven. Shadow King is priming Evan to be Apocalypse. Victor is manipulating Daken by twisting his daddy issues.

The biggest manipulation comes from Betsy. I’ve loved how Remender has written Psylocke and she has two huge moments in this issue. Uncanny X-Force #31 ends with what could be a final execution as one of Logan’s teammates goes rogue. The covert team’s final mission mirrors the one that started the series.

All the agendas of these heroes and villains could lead to drastic twists into a new direction. That’s why I’ve always said Remender is fearless writer. Anything could happen in his book.
